The Tuskegee Airmen Memorial at Sewickley Cemetery is the largest outdoor memorial of its kind in the United States. Regis Bobonis Sr. a journalist and historian, learned that their were more Tuskegee Airmen from Western Pennsylvania than any other state in the union — including the only woman, Rosa Mae Willis Alford of Beaver County. Eight of the airmen are from the Sewickley area: Sgt. James Addison, Lt. Curtis Branch, Lt. William Curtis, Lt. William Gilliam, Sgt. Frank Hailstock, Jr., Lt. Mitchell Higginbotham, Lt. Robert Higginbotham, Lt. William Johnston, Jr..

Virginia Hailstock and Mildred Nash had the priviledge of meeting Representative Shirley Chisholm at the Sewickley Community Center. Representative Chisholm was the first Black woman elected to Congress in 1968, and the first woman to seek the Democratic Party's presidential nomination in 1972. Her motto, campaign slogan and title of her autobiography was "Unbought and Unbossed"! She was known as "Fighting Shirley" who was an advocate for economic justice and racial and gender equality.

Sewickley Elementary School in Sewickley, Pennsylvania was formerly the Richardson Romanesque Sewickley Public School. Built in 1894 on the corner of Broad and Thorn Streets and nicknamed "the yellow brick school". It was razed in 1975. Many class pictures taken on the front steps.
