First seen caterpillar starting metamorphosis. A monarch caterpillar transforms into a butterfly through complete metamorphosis, progressing from an egg to a larva (caterpillar), pupa (chrysalis), and finally an adult butterfly.

No one is sure when the rain gauge was last emptied but judging from the standing water, the garden saw a lot of rain! The last photo is just for fun!

Ever wonder how potatoes grow? We don't plant "seeds", we plant "seed potatoes" but then what happens? According to the International Potato Center -The potato (Solanum tuberosum) is an herbaceous annual. As the potato plant grows, its compound leaves manufacture starch that is transferred to the ends of its underground stems (or stolons). The stems thicken to form a few or as many as 20 tubers close to the soil surface. The number of tubers that actually reach maturity depends on available moisture and soil nutrients. At the end of the growing season, the plant’s leaves and stems die down to the soil level and its new tubers detach from their stolons. The tubers then serve as a nutrient store that allows the plant to survive the cold and later regrow and reproduce. Each tuber has from two to as many as 10 buds (or “eyes”), arranged in a spiral pattern around its surface. The buds generate shoots that grow into new plants when conditions are again favorable.

Lots of posts today. A big thank you to Ed for weeding the zinnia circle and to Ed and Rose Ann for planting zinnia seeds this morning. This is much later than we normally plant but we hope for blooms at the end of August and through the end of the season.
