🎉 We are thrilled to share that The White Pig Animal Sanctuary has been awarded a $5,000 grant from The Bama Works Fund of the Dave Matthews Band at CACF in support of our Care, Connection & Compassion Program! 💚🐷

This funding will help us provide humane education and animal-assisted learning experiences for underserved youth and families throughout Central Virginia. Through meaningful interactions with rescued farm animals, participants learn empathy, compassion, environmental stewardship, and plant based living practices.

We are deeply grateful to The Bama Works Fund of the Dave Matthews Band at CACF for investing in programs that strengthen our community while fostering kindness toward animals and one another.

Thank you for helping us create opportunities for connection, healing, and compassion—one person and one animal at a time. 🐾

Happy Earth Day! 🌎

One way we practice Earth Day every day is by having placed the farm into a Conservation Easement.

Placing land into a conservation easement provides permanent protection for natural resources and ecosystem services. These voluntary legal agreements between landowners, land trusts, and government agencies ensure that land is managed to preserve its "conservation values" in perpetuity, which we are very proud of.

Another way is by our focus on a vegan diet and lifestyle, also known as being vegan.

Being vegan helps the environment primarily by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, land use, and water consumption, as plant-based diets are 75% less damaging to the planet than meat-rich diets.

A vegan diet can cut an individual's carbon footprint by up to 2.1 tons annually, mitigating climate change by reducing methane and nitrous oxide.

Key environmental benefits of a vegan diet include: Reduced Greenhouse Gas

Emissions: Plant-based meat alternatives can produce up to 90% fewer greenhouse gases than conventional meat. Less Land Use: A vegan diet requires significantly less land, as more than half of the world's crops are currently used to feed livestock, not humans. Water

Conservation: Animal agriculture is a major cause of water pollution and depletion. Producing a plant-based diet uses vastly less water than farming animals. Protection of

Ecosystems: Reduced demand for animal products reduces deforestation and destruction of wildlife habitats caused by land clearing for grazing or feed crops. Increased Energy

Efficiency: It is far more efficient to consume plants directly than to feed them to animals to create meat, requiring much less energy.

Please join us today in celebrating the beautiful Earth we get to live on, and by making choices like going vegan to save her for future generations.

The beauty of sanctuary is when a Mother and her 2 kids get to live their entire life together.

We rescued Misty and her son Thunder and daughter Lightning when they were just 2 weeks old. Running stray and in danger of being hit by a car or attacked by dogs, we welcomed them to The White Pig Animal Sanctuary in 2020. It’s adorable to see them curled up sleeping together.

Today we have 2 Rescue Anniversaries. Both were rescued on April 17th, 2017. I believe it was Easter.

First, Moon. Moon was listed on a local page as needing to be gone that day or he would be Easter dinner. Moon had been through three homes in three years, and his last home was living in the back of a pickup truck. When Moon arrived, he was sunburned and covered in ticks. I spent the better part of the next day just pulling ticks off him. He paced the fence for days. We were able to get him neutered about a week and a half later, and he just calmed down.

Today, Moon is one of the sweetest pigs in the herd, and his best friend is Gordy.

Rollins (named after the great Henry Rollins) actually arrived earlier in the day. His people got him as a Christmas gift, and by Easter, they were over him. Rollins was a bottle baby, which is when people buy a pig when they are days old, take them away from their moms and siblings, so people can bottle-raise them.

Rollins was listed for free on Craigslist, which meant the only people willing to take him wanted to eat him. When Rollins arrived, he was so tiny but covered in mange. All he did was itch himself. But we wormed and vaccinated Rollins, and about a month later, he recovered. Rollins hangs out with the big pigs in the main herd, and his best buddy is Pete (Steele), another bottle baby.

We are looking for volunteers to help with spring cleaning. Now that warmer weather is upon us, we need help cleaning barns, hanging sun shades and cleaning fans. As a bonus, you also get to enjoy being out in nature and giving belly rubs.

Today is 🐷💚

As part of Farm Sanctuary’s 40th anniversary, sanctuaries around the world are coming together in a shared moment of reflection, connection, and solidarity. It’s a day to honor what sanctuary truly means—safety, dignity, and lifelong care—for the animals who call places like ours home.

We are proud to stand alongside a global community committed to compassion, protection, and hope for animals everywhere.

On a more personal note, Farm Sanctuary has been a guiding light in our journey. Our founder, Dina, began her path in 1989 when she started Syracuse University for Animal Rights and helped sponsor one of Farm Sanctuary’s rescued animals through an early fundraiser. Her second rescued pig, Jacob, was referred to her by Farm Sanctuary in 1996. She later attended their Critter Conference in 1997 while dreaming of creating a sanctuary of her own, and in 2012 had the incredible honor of hosting Gene Baur at her vegan B&B—a true full-circle moment.

We can honestly say we’ve been supporters since the very beginning. Without Farm Sanctuary, places like The White Pig Animal Sanctuary might not exist.

Today, we celebrate sanctuary—in all its forms—and the movement that makes it possible.

Happy 7-year rescue anniversary to Chester. Chester's journey began when he was left at our local SPCA in the overnight drop box on a stormy and chilly night, but he was destined for greatness, like his namesake Chester Bennington. Our SPCA does not take in pigs, so they brought him to us immediately, and his life forever changed. Chester thrives in the special needs herd with Ernie, not because he is special needs, but because when we rescued him, he was a tiny bundle of joy, too small to join the big herd. By the time he had grown enough to live with the big herd, Ernie and he had formed an unbreakable bond. Chester may be the crankiest pig at the sanctuary, but we still love him.

We are bursting with pride for our sister organization, The White Pig B&B! 🐷💚

The White Pig Bed and Breakfast has just been named a winner of PETA's inaugural Hospitality with Heart Award — recognizing them as one of the top vegan retreats in the entire United States. 🎉

This award is a beautiful reflection of the values we share: compassion for animals, a commitment to vegan living, and a deep belief that kindness should be at the heart of everything we do. The nearly 60 rescued animals living on those 172 peaceful acres in Schuyler, Virginia are proof of what's possible when love drives every decision.

Congratulations to Dina and the whole White Pig family — we couldn't be more proud. 🌿
