You don't have to be a business or organization focused specifically on domestic violence. Anyone who believes in supporting women, survivors, and people who have overcome difficult circumstances is welcome to get involved.

She Rises is about creating an evening of courage, connection, encouragement, and community. Our sponsors help us create a space where women can come together, hear real stories, find hope, and be reminded that their circumstances do not have to define their future.

🐾 Meet the Team Monday! 🐾

It's Monday, which means it's time to meet another member of the H2C team! This week, we're introducing someone who has spent a lifetime surrounded by animals and brings that experience and compassion to the animals in our care.

Meet Natalie, one of our Animal Care Staff members!

"Hi! I'm Natalie, and animals have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I grew up with my mom, who was a dog breeder, trainer, and shelter manager, so I was raised around dogs, horses, and farm animals. I participated in dog and horse 4-H, worked as a stable hand caring for horses, goats, and other animals, and grew up fostering dogs when my mom worked at a shelter.

Throughout my life, I've cared for animals with a variety of personalities, medical needs, and behavioral challenges, including fearful dogs and dogs with traumatic backgrounds. I've learned how to read body language, remain calm, and adjust my approach to each animal's individual needs. Caring for animals has always been something I genuinely enjoy, and I love getting to know each one as an individual.

At home, I have a Miniature Australian Shepherd named Brew, who has been by my side through college, major life changes, and my transition into adulthood. She has been there for some of my hardest moments and happiest memories, and our bond has shown me just how special the relationship between people and their dogs can be.

I'm grateful to be part of H2C and to have the opportunity to give other animals the same patience, care, and love they deserve."

VENDORS WANTED!

We're looking for local businesses and nonprofits to join us at She Rises: A Girls' Night of Courage & Confidence on Friday, November 6 at the Grand Ledge Opera House.

We're looking for vendors who offer resources, services, or products focused on women, self-care, wellness, support, and personal growth. Think mental health resources, women's health, wellness, beauty, fitness, self-care, advocacy, counseling, or anything else that fits the spirit of the evening.

This isn't about filling a room with people selling products. We want to create a space where women can connect with resources, discover something new, and feel supported.

If your business or nonprofit feels like a good fit for She Rises and you'd like to have a table, we'd love to hear from you!

🐾 Meet the Team Monday! 🐾

This week, we are switching gears and introducing a member of the H2C team who spends their time making sure the animals in our care are happy, healthy, and getting plenty of attention.

Meet Rey, one of our Animal Care Staff members!

"Hi! I'm Rey, an undergraduate student studying Biology at Grand Valley State University. One of my main areas of interest is animal behavior, and I love learning more about all the wonderful critters of the world. I grew up surrounded by animals, from cats to horses, and I've been involved in dog training and competing in agility for about a decade. I've also spent time volunteering at my local fair and pet rescues, including fostering animals and helping them find good homes.

My family currently has three dogs and two horses. My own dog is an Australian Shepherd named Beowulf, and the other dog pictured is my parent's dog, Sunny.

As part of the animal care staff at H2C, I get to be hands-on in making sure all of the animals are happy and healthy. I help provide the enrichment, exercise, care, and love they need while they're with us. I'm obviously passionate about animal welfare, so I'm honored to be part of such a great cause and to play a role in caring for the animals we serve."

We wanted to give you a closer look at what happens when a pet comes into the care of Hope’s 2nd Chance Animal Sanctuary, and where your donations go.

Right now, 8 lives are depending on us. We are caring for 5 dogs and 3 cats whose families made the courageous decision to leave domestic violence. While their people work toward safety and a new beginning, we make sure their pets are safe, loved, and cared for.

We provide safe housing, food, exercise and enrichment, veterinary care, preventative care, and anything else they need while they are with us. We keep pets on the food they came in with whenever possible to help keep things familiar, and we make sure they receive the veterinary care they need, from updated vaccinations and preventatives to treating unexpected medical issues.

Recently, we have had some extra veterinary expenses, including ear infections, a seizure, and additional testing to get answers for pets in our care. We cover these expenses because we treat every animal here like family. Survivors are never asked to cover these costs. We understand that when someone is starting a new life, their resources need to go toward creating safety and stability for themselves and their families.

The average cost of caring for one animal during their stay is approximately $2,200 per dog and $1,300 per cat. With our current residents, that is more than $15,800 in care, and the need continues to grow.

Whether you can give $5 or $500, your contribution makes a difference. Every donation helps provide food, medical care, supplies, enrichment, and a safe place for these pets while their families rebuild their lives.

When you donate to Hope’s 2nd Chance, you aren't just helping an animal. You're helping protect a family and remove one more barrier standing between a survivor and a safer future.
