In 1995, Dolly Parton started mailing books to children in her home county to inspire children to love reading in honor of her dad, who couldn’t read or write.

That idea lives here too. Currently, 3,811 children in Northern Santa Barbara County find a book in the mailbox every month — because of neighbors who fund it, volunteers who run it, and a woman from Sevier County, TN who started it all.

Northern Santa Barbara County United Way is proud to share the impact of our recent CalKIDS outreach in the Guadalupe community!

During the Guadalupe School District Data Confirmation events on August 4th and 6th, we assisted 245 children and their families in accessing $190,464 in CalKIDS Scholarship funds—an average of $777 per child to support their future college education. 💙🎓

These funds represent more than numbers. They represent opportunities for local students to dream bigger, plan for higher education, and invest in their futures.

A huge thank you to our community partners, families, and everyone helping us connect local children with resources that can make a lasting difference.

As I Near My Final Days at United Way...I'd Love to See You One More Time

For twenty years, it has been one of the greatest privileges of my life to serve this community through United Way.

As many of you know, my retirement is just days away.
Before I begin that next chapter, there is one event I hope you'll consider sharing with me.

On October 10, we'll celebrate the 20th Annual Mayors' Ball. I would genuinely enjoy seeing many of the people who have helped shape this remarkable journey.

This year, I'm extending a special invitation that goes beyond attending the event. I'll tell you more in my next note, but I think you'll discover it's one of the most meaningful opportunities we've ever created for our community.

Because of community partners like Walmart, we're able to collect and distribute essential school supplies to local students, helping them start the school year equipped, confident, and ready to learn. Every backpack, notebook, and pencil makes a difference for children and families across Northern Santa Barbara County.
