SMEEA Members,

You have probably received many inquiries about whether SMEEA would send a message regarding attendance at the SMBSD luncheon on Tuesday, August 11 at Allan Hancock College. Especially after CSEA stated their leadership team will not be attending.

In solidarity with CSEA Chapter 129, SMEEA's Executive Board, Negotiations Team, and Organizing Team will NOT be attending the SMBSD Kickoff BBQ. We also cannot celebrate or pretend everything is okay when the district has failed to provide the affordable healthcare and professional respect our members deserve. We are not telling members to do the same, but make the choice that is best for them. This event is not required for members to attend.

SMEEA leadership recognizes the strategies and tactics other CTA chapters have recently used to achieve successful negotiation outcomes; however, this is NOT a tactic our Leadership has fostered at this time. Such actions require 97% of employees to be 100% on board. If you are not attending the SMBSD luncheon you are expected to work your full contract hours.

California teachers gathered enough signatures to put Prop 3 on the November ballot, which is an extension of Prop 55. SMBSD could lose up to $50 million if it doesn’t pass. We have to work together to make sure this passes!

Your SMEEA leadership team, Vice President Marisa Philley & Elementary Director Mercedes Barraza, attended the 26/27 SMBSD Leadership Symposium today at TKJH. They heard inspiring words from Dr. J Sanderlin and her Why Not Incubator. Heard about Year 2 and the Bright Future Project. And Dr McDuffie’s focus Mission statement for the year. Few more weeks left of summer, but Admin is already back at work! Stay tuned Members! This year will be great!
