FoodWhat

FoodWhat Through FoodWhat, youth say they find healing, inspiration, and family. We use a graduated leadership model from Spring to Summer to Fall.
(1)

FoodWhat is a safe space where youth use their strength to access opportunities that lead to radical diet change, critical job training, personal growth and more. “Food, What?!” programs are held on our half-acre organic farm and in Watsonville through a partnership with Live Earth Farm. “Food, What?!” operates year round and offers three major seasons of youth programming. There is a 12-week Spri

ng Internship serving 52 youth, a full time Summer Job employing 22 youth, and 12 youth continue on in the fall running different projects on the farm and in the community. These opportunities include components in leadership training (with a focus on communication, responsibility, and transferable job skills), organic farming and gardening, cooking and basic nutrition, entrepreneurship/business, and social justice work. We spend part of our time with our hands in the soil, part time participating in empowerment and skill-based workshops, and part of our time working to serve the greater community. Through all that we do, healthy, inspiring food is at the center.

This month, we had the honor of celebrating with members of our FoodWhat?! community at the 2026 QYLA event held at Pajaro Valley High School. We are incredibly proud to share that members of our FoodWhat?! family—including staff, junior staff, and former youth—were recognized as nominees for the Q***r Youth Leadership Awards. FoodWhat?! Staff Irene, Sergio, Lily, Diana, and Elana came to show their love and support. This celebration reminded us of the power of community, visibility, and uplifting q***r youth voices. Thank you to QYLA for creating a space where leadership, identity, and belonging are honored. 🌲🏳️‍🌈✨

It’s been a beautiful year of youth showing up for each other! Even after Fall programming wrapped, FoodWhat youth jumped on opportunities to give back. They signed up to lend a hand at the Second Harvest Food Bank distribution event, and the youth-powered pumpkin pies they made in partnership with Beckmann’s Bakery were a hit, warming the bellies and holiday tables of countless supporters and community partners. 💫 Let’s do as the youth do and keep showing up with love this season 💗Happy Holidays!

Every Thursday in September and October, FoodWhat youth manage an affordable farmstand, featuring farm-fresh produce they have grown and harvested. Located outside the PVUSD Family Engagement & Wellness Center, the farmstand is all about sharing abundance with the community and also learning some key business operation skills. This past summer, youth distributed over 1,000 lbs of healthy food to students and families who frequented the Wellness Center. An additional 1,153 lbs of healthy food was donated to local organizations supporting food access in the Watsonville community, such as Raices Y Cariño Loaves and Fishes and Second Harvest Food Bank 🙌🏽
🍅 Please note: The final date of our farmstand for 2025 will be Thursday, October 23. 🌽

For the first time since the Zoom “Cook at Home” program was introduced back in 2020, it was the youth leading the youth! 💪🏽 Monse, a member of our junior staff, led the cook for our Veggie Chilaquiles. Using veggies they grew from the farm and a few purchased ingredients, youth were able to practice their culinary skills at home, following along with Chef Monse. 🧑🏽‍🍳 We were blessed to have access to the beautiful teaching kitchen facilities at Starlight Elementary Culinary Garden & Teaching Kitchen for those unable to make use of their home kitchen. 🍳 Our recipes included Three Sister Tostadas, Garbanzo Burgers, Vegan Alfredo, SopaNOTmarachun, Sloppy Joses, and Chilaquiles, which were all plant based, giving the youth an opportunity to explore new foods along with familiar flavors. 😋 YUM!
