The Bay Area is often seen as a place of opportunity.

But for many families, the rising cost of simply getting by tells a different story.

In Santa Clara County, a family of four with two working parents may need more than $16,700 a month just to cover basic expenses. Meanwhile, the county’s median household income falls thousands of dollars short of that benchmark.

When families are working hard just to meet basic needs, school-related costs can quickly become one more impossible choice.

Every student deserves to start the school year feeling confident, prepared, and ready to learn. That’s why community support matters.

Summer break doesn’t feel the same for every family.

For some students, summer means camps, travel, and enrichment. For others, it can mean food insecurity, isolation, lost academic support, or stress about the next school year already approaching.

The gap between students doesn’t pause when school ends.

Neither do we.

A HUGE thank you to the Women in Leadership (WILL) team at Lam Research Corporation for hosting THREE backpack builds this week for LAM's annual Week of Service! 💜🎒

Together, WILL members and Lam employees rang in their 10th YEAR OF SUPPORT, helping assemble backpacks that will support Bay Area students as they head back to school feeling confident and prepared.

This AAPI Heritage Month, we’re spotlighting a Bay Area school helping students find belonging, confidence, and opportunity.

At the Edwin and Anita Lee Newcomer School in San Francisco, newly arrived immigrant and refugee students are supported as they adjust to a new country, new language, and new school system—often while navigating immense change.

Chinese is the first (and often only) language of the majority of the students and families served when they arrive, making spaces of support, cultural understanding, and educational opportunity especially meaningful.

This month, and every month, we celebrate the resilience of newcomer families and the educators helping students build a brighter future.

In one of the wealthiest regions in the world, many Bay Area families are still struggling to keep up with the cost of everyday life.

Rosa (whose name has been changed to protect her privacy) shared her story with us — not just about hardship, but about resilience, parenthood, and continuing to move forward for her daughters.

Stories like hers are closer to home than many people realize.

Living in the Bay Area means living alongside incredible innovation. But, for many, it can also mean being faced with incredible inequality.

Thousands of working families across our region are still struggling to keep up with the rising cost of everyday life.

Teachers do more than educate.

They create safe spaces, build confidence, and show up for their students every single day.

This week, let's take time to celebrate the educators who make everything possible—and the moments of joy that remind us why it matters. 💛

Laughter is more than a reaction — it’s a sign of comfort, connection, and community.

At Family Giving Tree, we believe everyone deserves moments filled with joy, confidence, and the freedom to simply be.

This World Laughter Day, we’re celebrating the power of community to create moments that make laughter possible — in classrooms, at home, and throughout the Bay Area.

Because when people show up for one another, hope grows. And so does joy.
