🐾 SUPPORT FOR BANNING COMMUNITY FOSTERS 🐾

The City of Banning currently has no animal shelter, and compassionate residents are stepping up to temporarily foster found pets.

These community members are opening their homes and caring for animals out of the goodness of their hearts — often without the support and resources normally provided through a shelter foster program.

Operation Empty Cages wants to help support these fosters.

When resources and funding are available, we may be able to assist community fosters with:

• Spay and neuter
• Vaccinations and microchipping
• Food and basic supplies
• Necessary veterinary care
• Other resources needed to help care for the animal

IMPORTANT — OEC IS PROVIDING SUPPORT ONLY

Operation Empty Cages is NOT taking ownership, custody, or possession of these animals.

Providing financial assistance, veterinary services, food, supplies, referrals, or other resources does not constitute an intake or transfer of ownership to Operation Empty Cages.

The animal remains in the care and custody of the individual fostering the animal, and the foster remains responsible for complying with all applicable requirements concerning found animals, including efforts to locate the legal owner.

Our goal is simple:

Support the people who are stepping up to help.

Community fosters are providing their time, their homes, and often their own money because they don’t want to see an animal left without somewhere safe to go.

They shouldn’t have to do it completely alone.

It’s funny how the little things that once annoyed us become the things we would give anything to have back.

I’d sweep up your hair every single day for the rest of my life if it meant having you here again.

Someone had posted how appalled they were that rescues abort babies, this was my response below. I can’t believe the callous responses out there from people who call themself rescue and are supposed to protect animals. Not all rescues are alike, not all rescues value all lives. Know what you are supporting. One rescue that we all know has the motto “Save them all” but they don’t really mean it because they abort. I was actually attacked by those that call themself rescue for my comment to the poster. Do you support my comment? Do you believe all lives matter? I just want to make sure our followers know where we stand on this issue.

“Working in an animal shelter, I witnessed pregnant dogs and cats being spayed and their pregnancies terminated. And there is something I will never forget:

The mothers knew. 💔🐾

Every single mother I personally witnessed afterward searched for her babies. I watched them become restless, confused, withdrawn, and show behavioral changes following the loss.

So please don’t tell me animals “don’t know the difference.”

They know pregnancy.
They know birth.
They know their babies.
They know when something is missing.

Animals form bonds. They nurture. They protect. They search. And yes, they can experience behaviors consistent with grief and distress.

I understand the devastating reality of animal overpopulation. I understand shelters are drowning in unwanted litters and that difficult decisions are made every single day. But acknowledging that reality does not mean we have to pretend there is no emotional impact on the mother.

What I witnessed changed me.

The answer cannot simply be dealing with unwanted pregnancies after they happen. We have to do far more to prevent them in the first place through accessible spay/neuter programs, responsible pet ownership, education, and accountability.

Animals feel more than many people give them credit for.

I saw it with my own eyes. And I will never forget the mothers who searched for babies that were never coming back. 💔🐾”

A Piece of Me Goes With Them

Each time an animal passes through my life,
I know that I have been blessed.
They arrive asking for so little,
yet somehow give me everything.

A trusting look.
A head resting quietly in my hand.
A tail that still finds a reason to wag
after the world has given them every reason not to.

And when they leave this earth,
they take a piece of me with them.
Not because I loved them too much,
but because loving them changed who I am.

If only people would stop long enough
to truly listen to the animals.

They would learn that animals speak
without ever saying a word.

They love.
They grieve.
They mourn those they lose.
They feel fear and pain.
They know loneliness.
They know kindness.
They forgive far more than we deserve.
And they understand so much more
than we give them credit for.

I have looked into the eyes
of animals who have been abused,
neglected, abandoned and forgotten.

I have watched innocent lives disappear
simply because there was no space left for them.

And somewhere along the way,
all of it began taking pieces of me too.

Every animal hurt by a human.
Every dog left alone in a yard.
Every frightened soul waiting behind kennel bars.
Every life ended because there was nowhere else to go.

A little piece of me dies with them.

But then another animal looks into my eyes,
places their trust in my hands,
and reminds me why I cannot stop caring.

So bring them inside.

Let them sleep where they can hear your voice.
Let them know the warmth of your home,
the touch of your hand,
and the safety of belonging.

Don’t just own an animal.

Make them family.

Look into their eyes.
Really look.

Give yourself the chance to know them,
to listen to everything they say without words,
and to receive everything they came here to teach you.

Because when you finally open your home to an animal,
you may think you are changing their life.

But one day you will realize—

they transformed your heart
into something you never imagined it could be.

💔 FLAPJACK IS HOME 💔

Today, we had to say goodbye to our sweet Flapjack.

We learned that Flapjack had tumors on his spleen and liver and was bleeding internally. There was nothing more we could do for him except give him the final gift of love—letting him go peacefully and with dignity.

Flapjack came to us after being found lying in bed beside his deceased owner, Sharon. The night before she passed, Sharon had asked us to care for him if anything happened to her.

Somehow, she knew. ❤️

We made her a promise, and we kept it.

Flapjack and his beloved doggie companion, Latte, became part of our family here at the ranch. Last year, we said goodbye to Latte after her battle with urethral cancer.

And today, Flapjack joined her.

As heartbroken as we are, there is something comforting in imagining Flapjack and Latte together again, finally home with their heavenly mom, Sharon. 🌈🐾

It was an absolute honor to be their caretakers during their remaining time here on earth. They were entrusted to us, and we loved them, protected them, sought medical care for them, and stayed beside them until the very end.

To be a guardian of all beings is a privilege we should honor.

Rescue isn’t always about finding another home. Sometimes it’s about being the home. Sometimes it’s making a promise to someone who can no longer keep it themselves. And sometimes it’s loving an animal enough to walk beside them all the way to the end.

Rest peacefully, Flappy. 💔

Go find Latte.

Go find your mom.

Your family is together again. 🌈❤️🐾

Today’s vet bill to lay Flapjack to rest was $773.97, any support to help our animals is greatly appreciated.

When it rains, it pours 😞

🙏 PLEASE KEEP FLAPJACK IN YOUR PRAYERS 🙏

Flapjack’s story with us began in one of the most heartbreaking ways imaginable.

He was found lying in bed with his deceased owner. 💔

The night before she passed, his owner asked us to care for Flapjack if anything happened to her. Somehow, she knew. She wanted to make sure her boy would be safe and loved—and we promised her he would be.

Flapjack came to the ranch along with his doggie partner, Latte. Sadly, we lost Latte last year to urethral cancer after doing everything we could for her, including treatment through UC Davis Oncology.

Now we are worried about our Flappy. 💔

A few weeks ago, Flapjack saw his veterinarian because his arthritis was making it increasingly difficult for him to get up and down. We started him on an NSAID for pain and inflammation, and he was doing beautifully on it.

But this week, something changed.

Flappy has had a decreased appetite—which is VERY unlike him—lethargy, and now a distended, hard abdomen. That is a huge cause for concern, and we aren’t taking any chances.

We see his veterinarian this morning. 🙏

Please keep our sweet boy in your prayers. We made a promise to his owner that we would care for him, and that is exactly what we will continue to do.

This is what sanctuary means to us. We don’t pass our difficult or aging animals on to someone else when things get hard. We are the rescue. We are their home. We stay beside them through the vet appointments, the diagnoses, the treatments, the good days and the frightening ones.

And we cannot do it without you.

🐾 MILEY UPDATE — WE COULD USE YOUR SUPPORT 🐾

Sweet Miley came to us after her owner passed away, and she is now part of our family here at the ranch. ❤️

Miley is living with leukemia, and this past week she gave us another reason to worry — three bloody noses.

Last Wednesday, we took her to the ER. Thankfully, she was stable enough to come home with us to be closely monitored until we could get her in with her primary veterinarian.

Yesterday, we had that appointment.

We are taking this one step at a time. Her veterinarian’s number-one concern right now is her clotting factors, so bloodwork was done and we are currently waiting for those results.

If the nosebleeds continue, our next steps may include:

🐾 X-rays to look for possible polyps or tumors
🐾 Further evaluation of her nasal cavity
🐾 A nasal scope if the bleeding continues

At this time, there are no signs pointing toward a foxtail, as Miley has not been sneezing.

Yesterday’s veterinary bill alone was $237.24, and depending on what happens next, Miley may need additional diagnostics and treatment.

One thing that is important for people to understand about what we do here: we don’t send animals to other rescues — we ARE the rescue.

When a difficult or medically complicated case comes into our care, we don’t simply pass that animal along. And we don’t place our hardest medical cases into homes when we believe their ongoing needs are best managed here. We want to personally make sure their appointments happen, their medications are given, changes in their condition are noticed, and their medical needs are tended to.

For dogs like Miley, the ranch is home. ❤️

Miley has already lost her person. We want to make sure that for however long she is with us, she knows she is safe, loved, and worth fighting for.

We care for pups like Miley here at the ranch every single day, and we truly need the support of our community to continue providing the veterinary care they need.
