This month's La Mesa Library Book Club meets at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20. Pick up a copy of "Inland" by Téa Obreht from the front desk of the library.

Synopsis: In the lawless, drought-ridden lands of the Arizona Territory in 1893, two extraordinary lives unfold. Nora is an unflinching frontierswoman awaiting the return of the men in her life—her husband, who has gone in search of water for the parched household, and her elder sons, who have vanished after an explosive argument. Children's Book Week is winding down, but it's not too late to join in on the fun. This year's official celebratory poster featuring the guardian lion was illustrated by artist Grace Lin.

“This year’s theme is Books: Get Curious. The good people at Every Child a Reader sent a couple of options, but ‘Get Curious’ immediately resonated,” said Lin. “I feel that kids need curiosity—interest in life, people, the world, and beyond—in order to flourish. But we are living in a time where there is a segment of the population that is trying to curtail that curiosity with book banning and unnecessary restrictions. This month's La Mesa Library Teen Book Club will take place at 4 p.m. on May 19. Discussion will center on "Warcross" by Marie Lu (the first in a two-book series).
