IMPT! Temporary emergency shellfish area closure: Poquoson River, York County & City of Poquoson

The Virginia Department of Health, Division of Shellfish Safety announced today that the portions of the Poquoson River in York County and the City of Poquoson formerly classified as Open/Approved, are closed to shellfish harvesting due to a release of untreated sewage impacting water quality in nearby shellfish harvesting waters.

Due to potential microbiological pollution hazards, shellfish taken from the area affected by the emergency closure are currently unacceptable for consumption. The temporary emergency closure is effective Wednesday, December 17, 2025. National Shellfish Sanitation Program (NSSP) regulations require a twenty‐one day closure beginning with the date of completed repairs.

Tomorrow is the kick off of the Great Middlesex Green Up 2025!

Three large groups(over 30 volunteers) will be cleaning up approximately 30 miles of roadway on Saturday, March 29.

Please take extra caution and give them extra room(and an encouraging thank you!) if you are travelling on:

Warner Road(Route 17 to Old Virginia Street)

Old Virginia Street (Route 17 to Urbanna)

Providence Rd/Bland Point (Deltaville)

Virginia's ban on single use expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam goes into effect July 1st, 2025.

Starting July 1st, 2025, Virginia’s large chains (20 or more locations), will no longer use single use foam cups and take out containers. Smaller establishments will have until 2026 to comply with the ban.

Huge step for our Virginia environment!
