Tonight, at our monthly NEKCAN Board meeting, we approved 13 new grant applicants for the month of May — the largest number of new recipients we have ever approved in a single month.

These 13 individuals join our existing recipients, bringing the total to 34 grant checks going out this month and more than $8,500 in direct financial assistance being provided to local individuals and families battling cancer.

While we are incredibly grateful to be able to help, moments like this are also deeply bittersweet. Behind every application is a person, a family, and a difficult journey none of them asked for. Seeing this many neighbors facing cancer at one time is heartbreaking.

To every recipient: please know you are not alone. Our community stands with you, and it is truly an honor to offer support during such a challenging season of life.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support NEKCAN and makes this assistance possible. Your generosity is making a real difference right here in the Northeast Kingdom. 💜

We are incredibly grateful to Community National Bank and to Lorilee Drown for choosing the Northeast Kingdom Cancer Action Network as part of CNB’s 175th anniversary celebration.

This generous donation helps us continue providing grant-based financial assistance to cancer patients and families throughout Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom during some of life’s most difficult moments.

Today we’re highlighting Lorilee Drown – our Barre office Manager. Lorilee is donating to the Northeast Kingdom Cancer Action Network because it’s close to her heart, and she’s proud to serve as treasurer. NEKCAN is a nonprofit that provides grant-based financial assistance to cancer patients in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom. In 2025, NEKCAN awarded nearly $100,000 to patients in need.
