GPIA had a busy couple of weeks out there representing and educating! – Erin and Aaron attended the National VOAD (Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster) Conference on May 4-8 in Reno. They also attended the Governor’s Hurricane Conference on May 9-16 in Palm Beach where they were asked to present at this event about their knowledge of said subject. Keep doing amazing things! 🌀💪

We issued the news release (below) from Lee County Solid Waste today and it likely will show up in the Eagle next week. However, we are sending this out to additional islanders just to ensure the community is aware of the need to set out trash, recycling and yard waste earlier on your collection day beginning in May. Please help spread the word among your friends and neighbors.

Lee County Solid Waste to begin seasonal adjustments to collection schedule

Some areas of county will see trash, recycling and yard-waste pickup begin one and a half hours earlier

Fort Myers, FL, April 22, 2026 – Residents of unincorporated Lee County, the Town of Fort Myers Beach, Village of Estero and City of Bonita Springs are asked to set their trash, recycling and yard waste to the curb by 5 a.m. beginning Friday, May 1.

This is 90 minutes earlier than the typical set-out time of 6:30 a.m. The seasonal change is to help the contracted haulers’ collection crews complete routes earlier in the day as summer heat arrives.

This annual seasonal adjustment does not impact the day of the week residents have their materials collected; that remains the same.

Unincorporated areas affected by the change include:

Alva
Captiva
Fort Myers Shores
Iona
Lehigh Acres
Matlacha
North Fort Myers
Pine Island
South Fort Myers

As a reminder, never put plastic bags or batteries in a recycle cart. Household alkaline batteries, AA, AAA, C, D, 9-volt and button batteries can be disposed of in your regular garbage cart. Any other type of battery (rechargeable, nickel-cadmium, automotive, lithium-ion, lead-acid) should be brought to the Household Chemical Waste Facility, 6441 Topaz Court, Fort Myers. Plastic bags should be recycled at designated drop‑off locations, typically available at grocery stores. They should not be put in a recycle cart.

Heading home for the summer?

Please drop off any unopened canned or dry goods at one of the following locations during the campaign period and help reduce food waste in Lee County.

Since the program's inception, more than 38,700 pounds of food has been diverted from potential disposal and sent to the Harry Chapin Food Bank - enough food to provide more than 32,200 meals to residents.
