Our Mother's Stewards

Our Mother's Stewards Our Mother's Stewards: because being stewards of our environment is essential and fun. A passion project that connects and improves our community.

Founded as a way to constructively honor my mother Dawn, after her passing. These events were created as a positive way to cope with the anniversary of my mother's death in 2011. She passed away suddenly the day after Mother's Day. In an attempt to combine my passion of environmental stewardship, bring the community together and improve mental health practices surrounding grief, these events were

organized. The events have been renamed several times and finally the not for profit organization was formed as "Our Mother's Stewards" to coincide the events around Mother's Day, incorporate OUR Mother earth, and the word stewards since we are the care takers of mother earth, as well as its similarity to my mother's maiden name of Stewart. We look forward to seeing you out for another great event for the whole family that improves the areas where we all live and where ever you may live. The efforts have expanded to not only include St. Johns County Florida but all locations needing some improvements. If you are interested in implementing an event in your area, please reach out as we have starter kits to help organize an Our Mother's Stewards event in your area. Thank you so much for your support and generosity in helping keep our home a beautiful place to live. ~ Meghan Holder

We have made some adjustments to our upcoming beach cleanup on 10/10/2026 at Hale'iwa Beach Park.

We will no longer be offering vendors or music but the "Show Must Go On!"

The core beach cleanup will still be happening 10:00a - 2:00pm.

We will provide the cleanup kits and gloves, water and light refreshments for volunteers.

We are still collecting items from local business to be offered as prizes to the volunteers who remove the most trash - yes we weigh it! No it doesn't count if the trash is removed from a trash receptacle (unfortunately this has been attempted...) lol

If signing up online, please note you will still be required to sign in onsite. All minors must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

If you own a business in or around Hale'iwa and want to donate items for the prizes, please send an email to [email protected]

Mahalo - we look forward to seeing you out on the beach October 10th!

We have some heartbreaking news to share. The nest laid by Krysta, the first loggerhead we satellite-tagged and released as part of the 2026 Tour de Turtles, disoriented this week due to lights from nearby properties on Anna Maria Island.

This week Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch & Shorebird Monitoring, AMITW was notified about 70 live and five dead hatchlings scattered along Gulf Drive South. They successfully rescued the live hatchlings and released them onto a darker stretch of beach. The next morning, they also found a hatchling in a pool and another in a storm drain – these hatchlings are recovering at Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium

Florida’s beaches host 90% of all sea turtle nesting in the U.S. and are densely developed, leading to disorientations like these occurring regularly. When local governments, property owners, and visitors are educated and change their behavior, it is possible to prevent disorientations.

As we enter peak hatching season, remember to turn off lights visible from the beach, close blinds and curtains, leave flashlights at home, and share this knowledge with your friends. Visit our website learn more: https://conserveturtles.org/program/beach-lighting/
