Have you visited the Sackets Harbor Military Cemetery? This cemetery is one of the village's most historically significant and quietly moving places.

Veterans from the War of 1812 through the present day are buried here, and the story of how this cemetery came to be is just as interesting.

Before 1820, the remains of officers and approximately 141 unknown soldiers who were killed in action during the War of 1812 or who died of sickness on the northern frontier were collected and buried within Madison Barracks, close to the harbor itself. In 1909, they relocated around 300 bodies to the present cemetery.

When the U.S. Army later made plans to move all of the remains to Woodlawn National Cemetery in Elmira, the people of Sackets Harbor said no. Local residents organized, protested, and successfully petitioned to keep their soldiers here, in the community they fought to defend. The Village of Sackets Harbor has owned and operated the cemetery ever since.

Walk through it, and you will find multiple historic markers, a memorial to Brigadier General Zebulon Pike and the officers killed at the Battle of York in 1813, and a memorial to unknown soldiers of the War of 1812.

These are the people who defended this village. They stayed because this community made sure they could.

If you have ever wanted to really understand what happened in Sackets Harbor during the War of 1812, a trail on the Battlefield will walk you right through it. 🏛️🍂

The Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site History Trail is a three-quarter-mile loop that winds through the 70-acre historic area, with ten interpretive panels that tell the story of the battles, the naval presence on Lake Ontario, the 1860s Navy Yard, and the importance of preserving what happened here. The trail connects to the Village of Sackets Harbor's War of 1812 Bicentennial Recreation Trail, so there is even more to explore if you want to keep going!

The United States Department of the Interior designated the trail a National Recreation Trail in 2015, a recognition given to trails that demonstrate excellence in design, conservation, and public value.

We welcome you to walk it, jog it, or bike it. Even bring your four-legged friends!

The trail is completely free and open every single day of the year. Rain, shine, snow, fall foliage, whatever the North Country throws at it, the trail is there and so is the history.

Fall is honestly one of the most beautiful times to walk it. The leaves, the open fields, Lake Ontario in the distance. Take an hour and go.

It is that time again! The Village DPW will be collecting brush and leaves on Monday, November 2nd! 🍂🚛

This is a one-pass collection, so please be ready before they come through.

Here is everything you need to know:

✅ Leaves and small sticks are accepted

✅ Separate your leaves and branches

✅ Place debris at the curb - NOT in the roadway

❌ No fallen trees

❌ No cleaning out of lots or private property

❌ No bags - loose only please

❌ No return pickups - this is one pass only!

The fall to-do list is getting real. Windows that need a look, a door that sticks, a deck waiting for one more coat. 🍂🔨

O.D. Greene Lumber Sackets Harbor has a store right here on Route 3. They carry lumber, building materials, windows and doors, kitchen and bath supplies, docks, and rentals. They also have Ace Hardware products, free store pickup, and a UPS drop-off, so one stop can cover a lot of ground. Thier staff is beyond friendly and helpful which makes projects a breeze to figure out.
