The 3rd annual Summer Solstice 5K is coming to Sackets Harbor on Saturday, June 20!

3.1 miles through the heart of the village, starting and finishing at the Village Sentinel Bandstand on West Main Street, with a loop along the Lake Ontario waterfront. There's no better way to kick off summer in the North Country.

This year's race is organized by Willow Running in partnership with the The Garrett W. Loomis Foundation, supporting fire safety education in our region in memory of Garrett Loomis. You'll be running for a great cause through one of the most beautiful villages in Upstate New York.

Every soldier who has ever reported to Fort Drum, every family that has driven through that gate, traces a line back to this village, OUR village.

Sackets Harbor's access to Lake Ontario, its deep natural harbor, its proximity to Canada, and its abundant resources gave it enormous strategic value from the very beginning. When war with Great Britain broke out in 1812, the village became the headquarters of the entire U.S. Army and Navy on the northern frontier.

After the war, it was clear a permanent presence was needed to protect the northern border. Madison Barracks grew directly out of the earthen forts that had defended the harbor during the fighting. Built at a cost of $85,000 and named for President James Madison, it became one of the most respected military posts in the country.

Ulysses S. Grant served here.

General Mark Clark was born here.

Fiorello LaGuardia grew up within these walls.

By 1910, a training range north of the Black River - originally called Pine Plains Camp - had grown to over 17,000 acres.

That land would eventually become Fort Drum.

Fort Drum didn't appear out of nowhere. It was born from the battles fought on this waterfront, built from the lessons learned in this harbor, and shaped by the men and women who called Sackets Harbor home first.

That history belongs to this village. And it always will. ๐ŸŽ–๏ธ

Most people drive through Jefferson County without realizing they're passing through one of the most historically significant places in American military history.

Sackets Harbor was the site of not one, but two major battles during the War of 1812. It was the headquarters of the American naval fleet on Lake Ontario, a critical supply and command base, and, most notably, the original home of the military post.

That history isn't just preserved here. It's lived in. You'll find it in the stone buildings on Main Street, in the Battlefield State Historic Site on the waterfront, and in the bones of Madison Barracks. Nowhere else in New York can you walk the same ground where American sailors and soldiers defended a young nation, and then grab dinner with a lake view afterward.
