Sackets Harbor Chamber of Commerce

Sackets Harbor Chamber of Commerce All of us in Northern New York want our businesses to grow; however we can not do it alone.

The best way to develop together is to join forces and network with other local business owners in and around our community so everyone can benefit.

The building at 301 West Main Street has been standing in Sackets Harbor since 1802. It is the oldest structure on that stretch of the waterfront β€” and today it welcomes visitors to the village that its original owner founded.

Augustus Sacket was a New York City lawyer and businessman who purchased land on the southeast shore of Lake Ontario in 1801, recognizing the commercial advantage of the deep natural harbor of Black River Bay and the plentiful timber resources nearby. He built a fine mansion for his family the following year β€” the building that now serves as the Sackets Harbor Visitor Center.

He returned with a corps of workmen to begin construction of a new community, and Sackets Harbor quickly became a major shipping and shipbuilding center. Within a decade, the village he founded from a patch of unimproved lakefront land would become the headquarters of the entire U.S. Army and Navy on the northern frontier during the War of 1812.

Today you can stand at the lower end of Augustus Sacket's front lawn and look across the street where warships were built during the War of 1812. His house β€” the Sacket Mansion β€” is now the Sackets Harbor Visitor Center, offering exhibits highlighting local history, key sites and architectural features, and the story of the village.

The man who founded the village in 1801 built his home here in 1802. It has been welcoming people to Sackets Harbor ever since.

The Visitor Center is open through October 12, 2026. In September, hours are Thursdays through Sundays from 11am to 4pm. October hours are Fridays through Sundays, 11am to 4pm.

We have some exciting news to share this week. πŸŒŠπŸŽ‰

Sackets Harbor was just featured in Only In Your State β€” one of the most widely read travel and discovery publications in the country β€” as one of the most charming waterfront villages in all of New York.

The article highlights our War of 1812 history, the Sackets Harbor Battlefield, the Visitor Center housed in the original home of village founder Augustus Sacket, the Concerts on the Waterfront series, the Can-Am Festival, West Main Street shopping and dining, SacHen Cruises, Westcott Beach State Park, and the overall character of the village that makes Sackets Harbor worth more than a quick stop.

"Sackets Harbor manages to fit quite a bit into a small part of the Lake Ontario shoreline," the article notes. "You can take your time, and after a full day of exploring, ending up back near the harbor with boats on Black River Bay feels like a pretty fitting way to wrap it up."

We could not have said it better ourselves.

This is the kind of recognition that happens when a community invests in itself β€” when local businesses show up, when events are done right, and when the people who live here take pride in what they have built. Thank you to everyone who makes Sackets Harbor the kind of place that gets noticed.

Read the full article at the link below and share it with anyone who has been thinking about making the trip north.

We are so proud to have the Sackets Harbor Marathon & Half Marathon 9/6/2026 as a chamber member β€” and with race weekend literally here, we wanted to give them a proper spotlight. πŸƒπŸŒŠ

The Sackets Harbor Marathon and Half Marathon is one of those events that makes this village shine. Runners come from across the region and beyond to take on a certified course that starts and finishes at the Madison Barracks Polo Field and winds through the scenic streets of Sackets Harbor and along the shores of Lake Ontario. The first four and last four miles run right through the village and along the water β€” there is genuinely no more beautiful stretch of road to run in the North Country.

The race is a Boston Marathon qualifier, voted Runner Up for Best Marathon in New York State on RaceRaves, and nominated for Best Half Marathon in New York. A $10 discount is available for military, first responders, and front line medical β€” a detail we love about this event.

Here is what is happening this weekend:

πŸƒ **Race Day β€” Sunday, September 6**

Full Marathon (26.2 miles) and Half Marathon (13.1 miles) both start at 7am at the Madison Barracks Polo Field.

And if you are not running but want to cheer someone on β€” come out Sunday morning and show these runners some Sackets Harbor love. There is nothing better than a cheering crowd on race day.

This week's member spotlight is one of the most unique businesses to call Sackets Harbor home β€” and they are growing something pretty special right here on the shores of Lake Ontario. 🌱

Sackets Harbor Greens grows the very highest quality, organic herbs and micro greens. Good for people. Good for the planet. Always organic. And grown with some genuinely remarkable technology.

The farm is USDA certified organic and also offers Kosher certifications. They go above and beyond what is required for organic certification, refusing to use some inputs that are approved for organic farming β€” only using what they would happily eat and feed to their own families. Outside their year-round greenhouses, they plant trees, preserve wetlands, and maintain habitat for pollinators.

The farm operates the world's most advanced soil greenhouses, using state-of-the-art farm automation, environmental controls, and AI and machine learning data analytics to grow the very best results. It is a smarter way to farm.

And what they grow is genuinely beautiful. Organic Micro Red Veined Sorrel with a bright citrusy flavor. Micro Broccoli packed with antioxidants and sulforaphane. Micro Arugula with bold peppery character. Micro Dill that is intensely aromatic. Micro Kale loaded with vitamins and minerals. Organic Micro Red Bok Choy with vibrant purple-green leaves.

The farm offers same day delivery across New York State, New England, and Pennsylvania β€” keeping it fresh and close to home for longer shelf life, shorter deliveries, fewer road miles, and better food.

If you are a chef, a restaurant, or someone who takes seriously what goes on their plate β€” Sackets Harbor Greens is worth knowing about.

On Christmas Day in 1823, the first service was held at what is now known as the Old Stone Chapel in Sackets Harbor. The building was unfinished. There was no roof. The congregation gathered under an open sky.

That kind of devotion β€” to a building, to a community, to a moment β€” says something about the people who built this village.

Construction on what was then Christ Episcopal Church began in 1823, with the cornerstone laid on May 24th. Local Masonic Temple members assisted in the groundbreaking. The building is one of the earliest examples of Gothic architecture in the North Country, featuring a square belfry built over a columned Doric portico, Gothic arches, and square quoins reinforcing its corners and window openings β€” a design that foreshadowed the approaching Greek Revival Movement before that style had even fully arrived.

The first organ was purchased in 1832, and the church was consecrated in 1833. Among its congregation over the years were some genuinely notable names β€” Ulysses S. Grant, Fiorello LaGuardia, and Francis Bible all worshipped here at various points in the building's long life.

In February of 2021, the Sackets Harbor Historical Society purchased the building from the Episcopal Diocese of Central New York and renamed it the Old Stone Chapel β€” preserving it as a community cultural center and one of the most significant historic buildings in Jefferson County.

Throughout the summer of 2026, the Old Stone Chapel is open for tours every Saturday from 1 to 3pm, beginning June 27 and running through September 5. A representative from the Historical Society will be on hand to show you around and answer questions. The chapel is also available for weddings and private events.

If you have not been inside, today is a good time to change that.

When people ask what makes Sackets Harbor a great place to raise a family, the school district comes up every single time. And for good reason. 🏫

Sackets Harbor Central School is the kind of place that is increasingly rare β€” a small, tight-knit school community where teachers know every student by name, class sizes stay small, and the mission is taken seriously. The district is dedicated to educational excellence, empowering students to embrace life's challenges with knowledge, character, and a commitment to learning.

And then there is the athletic tradition that this village has been proud of for years.

The Sackets Harbor Patriots boys basketball team has made it to the New York State Class D Final Four three years running. Three consecutive years. In a program this size, that is not luck. That is culture, coaching, and kids who show up and compete. Proving that small schools from the North Country can go all the way.

That is the kind of thing that does not happen at a school people are running from. It happens at a school people are proud to be part of.

If you are a Fort Drum family figuring out where to put down roots β€” or a young professional thinking about the kind of community you want to raise your kids in β€” Sackets Harbor Central School deserves a serious look.
