🎨 JOIN US TOMORROW NIGHT!

The wait is almost over! TOMORROW NIGHT, the Art Association of Rutherford officially kicks off our new meeting year at 55 KIP Center!

📅 Thursday, September 10
⏰ 7:30 PM
📍 55 KIP Center, 55 Kip Avenue, Rutherford, NJ

We’re starting the year with a meeting that gives you a little bit of everything: a look at what AAR has planned for the coming year, time to create alongside fellow artists, and some useful skills you can take home with you.

🎨 CREATE

Bring 1–2 small objects from home to add to our group still lifes. We’ll arrange the objects together and spend the first 45 minutes to an hour drawing, painting, photographing, or interpreting the scenes in our own styles and mediums.

📸 CAPTURE

For the final 30–40 minutes, we’ll turn our attention to something every artist needs to know: HOW TO TAKE GREAT PHOTOS OF YOUR ARTWORK!

We’ll be sharing professional tips and techniques for getting better photographs of your work using something you already have in your pocket: your cell phone.

And remember, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE A MEMBER TO ATTEND!

Our meeting is OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, and we would love to welcome anyone interested in art, looking for a local creative community, considering joining AAR, or simply curious about what we have planned.

Bring an object. Bring your art supplies. Bring your phone. And most importantly, bring your creativity!

SEE YOU TOMORROW! 🎨📱📸

🎨 THIS THURSDAY, WE’RE BACK!

A new year of art, creativity, learning, and community begins THIS THURSDAY as the Art Association of Rutherford holds our first meeting of the year!

📅 Thursday, September 10
⏰ 7:30 PM
📍 55 KIP Center, 55 Kip Avenue, Rutherford, NJ

We have a lot happening this year, and Thursday night will be your first look at some of the exhibitions, events, demonstrations, and opportunities we have planned for our members.

But we’re not spending the whole meeting talking. We’re starting the year by MAKING ART!

Our special kickoff activity, SET THE SCENE: CREATE, COMPOSE, CAPTURE, will begin with members working together to build several group still lifes.

👉 BRING 1–2 SMALL OBJECTS that you can easily carry with you. We’ll combine everyone’s objects to create unique still-life arrangements, then spend about 45 minutes to an hour drawing, painting, photographing, or creating from them in the medium of your choice.

And there’s a second part!

📱 During the final 30–40 minutes, we’ll learn how to take better, more professional photographs of our artwork USING OUR CELL PHONES!

Better lighting. Better angles. Better composition. Better photos for exhibitions, applications, prints, websites, and social media.

Best of all, this meeting is OPEN TO THE PUBLIC!

Whether you’re already an AAR member, thinking about joining, looking to meet other artists, or just want to see what the Art Association of Rutherford is all about, come spend the evening with us.

See you THURSDAY! 🎨📸

As Harvesting Inspiration: A Fall Showcase begins its two-month run at the Nutley Public Library, we want to take you beyond the artwork and introduce you to the artists who created it. 🍂🎨 Each of our 12 participating AAR members brings their own style, inspiration, and creative story to the exhibition.

Today, we invite you to meet Alexandra Hanson-Harding and discover the artist behind the work.

Alexandra Hanson-Harding is a landscape painter whose work invites viewers to slow down and rediscover wonder in the living, breathing world around them. Her paintings capture fleeting moments in time—moments that are at once familiar and surprising. Through acrylic landscape painting, printmaking, and mixed-media experimentation, she explores the emotional resonance of place, memory, light, and atmosphere.

Years ago, a friend taught her a simple exercise: to frame the world with her fingers like a rectangle, squint through it, and say, “Click.” The gesture became a way of seeing—a reminder that every moment can become a photograph for the mind. That practice continues to shape her work today. Each painting begins with a pause: a recognition of something easily overlooked—the heat shimmering in the desert air, a city’s strange quiet after a national tragedy, a cat surveying its kingdom with contentment.

Hanson-Harding paints for people with busy lives and poetic souls—people who long to pause, breathe deeply, and reconnect with a sense of meaning and wonder. Her work is does not express hyperrealism so much as emotional truth. She seeks to create paintings that feel inhabited, images that convey the sensation of truly being somewhere in a particular instant. Through the work of her hands, she interprets and bears witness to what she sees, transforming observation into something intimate, reflective, and honest.

Alexandra’s first love was art, though for many years her creative life centered on writing and publishing. She worked as an editor at Scholastic, MacMillan/McGraw-Hill, and other publishers, and authored more than 30 books and hundreds of articles for teachers and young readers. Her focus has now returned fully to visual art.

Her work has been exhibited at the Leach Gallery, the Montclair Art Museum, the Nutley Public Library, the Lyndhurst Public Library, the KIPP Center, and Clara’s

AAR is in Clara’s Tunnel!

We’re happy to once again partner with the Rutherford Arts Council and bring the work of our members out into the community!

For the month of September, Clara’s Tunnel is featuring artwork from 10 AAR artists, and we love how much variety this display represents. From photography, collage, sculpture and fused glass to pastel, acrylic, colored pencil, watercolor and digital art, it gives you a little glimpse into just how many different kinds of artists make up the Art Association of Rutherford.

One of our members has always said that public art is the best art — and this display is a perfect example of why. You can stop by whenever you want, it doesn’t cost anything to experience, and it puts art right into a space that people in our community use every day.

Clara’s Tunnel doesn’t have an official address, but you can find it next to 62 Park Avenue in Rutherford. The artwork is on display 24/7 throughout the month of September, so stop by whenever you’re downtown and take a look!

A special thank you to Genesee Orlowicz and for inviting the AAR to be part of the tunnel and for continuing to give local artists opportunities to share their work.

Featured Artists: Carrie Nicole Corrie Siegenthaler Betty Infantes Joan Oppen Carin Loeffel Margaret Durbeck Ray Floriani Peg Trikoupis Cat Russell John Zollo

We hope you’ll stop by, check out the display, and support some of the talented artists who make up the AAR! ❤️🎨

Throughout August, the Art Association of Rutherford’s 2026 Juried Show brought together an incredible collection of artwork at the Johnson Public Library in Hackensack.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be highlighting the talented artists who participated in the show, sharing their featured works along with a short introduction to each artist.

Meet our artist |

Mark Ferguson has been a high school art teacher, university library director, researcher and cataloguer and lifelong student of art history, with an advanced degree in art history and criticism. Only recently has he found time to return to his original calling as a painter. He has worked in many media, including pottery, sculpture and printmaking. It is however in painting, with his explorations into form and color, found in both his abstract and representational work, that has been his most lasting endeavor. "In my latest series of landscape paintings I have chosen Rutherford as my subject with its century old houses, streets and environs. I start with observation which I then capture in a photograph. Where the work goes from there is guided as much by my own sense of form and color, as by the image itself. In this I follow the sesibilities of regionalist painters like Grant Wood or Edward Hopper, neither folk art or modern yet sharing attributes of both."
