Today is the first day of school in Ukraine.

For our latest Monthly Essentials Program distribution, we focused on helping displaced families with some of the added expenses that come with sending kids back to school.

Children were able to choose new backpacks, school supplies and winter coats for the months ahead.

One of our favorite parts was watching the kids look through all the backpacks and pick the one they wanted.

For families who have been forced to leave their homes and start over, even ordinary expenses like backpacks, notebooks and coats can be difficult to manage.

Today, these kids are beginning another school year in a country still at war, where air raid sirens and trips to bomb shelters have become part of going to school.

As children across Ukraine head back to classrooms today, we’re thinking of them and hoping for a safe school year ahead.

Today is Ukraine’s Independence Day.

For Ukraine, independence is not simply something to celebrate. It is something being fought for every single day.

It is the right to remain a sovereign nation.
The right to choose its own future.
The right to preserve its language, culture and identity.
The right for Ukrainian children to grow up in a free Ukraine.

For more than four years of full-scale war, Ukrainians have paid an unimaginable price to protect those rights.

We have met families who have lost their homes. Children who know the sound of air raid sirens and the way to the nearest bomb shelter. People who have left everything behind and people who continue to serve, rebuild, work, raise families and help their neighbors in the middle of war.

And still, Ukraine stands.

Today we honor the courage and sacrifice of the Ukrainian people and what they continue to fight so hard to protect:
A free, sovereign and independent Ukraine.

З Днем Незалежності, Україно.
Happy Independence Day, Ukraine.

More than four years into this war, Ukraine still needs our attention.

Today, KSL shared the story of Hope Across Borders 10th humanitarian trip to Ukraine.

Mike, Julie and I had the opportunity to talk about what we witnessed, the families we met, and why continuing to support Ukraine matters so much.

The needs haven’t disappeared. In so many ways, they’ve grown.

We’re incredibly grateful to KSL.com and Tim Vandenack for giving us the opportunity to share a small part of what families and children in Ukraine are still experiencing and to help make sure they aren’t forgotten.

Today is World Humanitarian Day.

Over the past four years, we’ve had the opportunity of working alongside some incredible humanitarian organizations and volunteers across Ukraine.

We’ve watched them deliver aid, care for displaced families, support children, run shelters, pack boxes, solve problems and show up again and again for people who need them.

What makes their work even more remarkable is that they are living through this war too.

They hear the same air raid sirens. They worry about their own families. Their lives have been changed by this war just like everyone else’s.

And still, they keep showing up for others.

So today is about them!

To the organizations, volunteers, friends and partners across Ukraine who have allowed us to work alongside you, thank you!! We see how hard you work, and we are incredibly grateful for all you do!

Чомусь сьогодні я відчула, що маю цим поділитися, особливо з моїми українськими друзями.

У житті кожного з нас бувають важкі дороги. Іноді з хорошими людьми трапляються жахливі речі.

Я бачила це в Україні. Я зустрічала людей, які втратили свої домівки, близьких людей і життя, яке вони колись мали.

Я не вірю, що ця війна відбувається тому, що Бог забув про Україну. Вона є результатом рішень злого диктатора і жахливих речей, які люди здатні чинити одне одному.
Навіть попри все це я всім серцем вірю, що Бог поруч. Він знає ваш біль. Він знає ваш страх. І Він любить вас.

Моя віра в Ісуса Христа є найбільшим джерелом надії в моєму житті. Я вірю, що Він помер за кожного з нас і що завдяки Йому смерть не є кінцем. Я вірю, що ми зможемо знову бути разом із тими, кого любимо.

Віра не означає, що ми не будемо відчувати біль, горе чи страх. Але я вірю, що навіть у найтемніші моменти Христос може дати нам мир і силу. Він ніколи нас не залишить.

Я не маю відповідей на запитання, чому вам довелося так багато страждати. Я просто хочу, щоб ви знали, у що я вірю:

Бог не забув про вас.
Він любить вас.
Ісус Христос поруч із вами.
Смерть не є кінцем.

У це я вірю всім своїм єством.

One thing we wanted to do on this trip was look for “the one,” the person right in front of us who we could help.

We decided that whenever we saw elderly women, or babushkas, selling produce along the side of the road, we would stop. Many elderly Ukrainians live on very small pensions, and this was one simple way we could help them directly.

These two sweet women were selling apples, onions, and potatoes. They were overwhelmed with emotion when we stopped and told them, “We’ll buy everything!”

It wasn’t a planned project or a large distribution. It was simply a chance to notice someone and help.

Everywhere we went in Ukraine, we saw signs pointing to bomb shelters.

Especially at schools.

When the air raid sirens go off during the school day, the children have to stop what they’re doing and go to the shelter. They stay there until the air alert is over.

Then they go back to class.

For more than four years, this has been part of growing up in Ukraine.

Kids know what the sirens mean. They know where to go. They know to wait in the shelter until the all-clear.

It’s become routine.

But it shouldn’t be.

Kids shouldn’t have to grow up this way.

While we were in Lviv, cruise missiles struck several locations across the city. One hit an apartment building, injuring 38 people and killing one man.

I kept having the same thought: They need water.

I didn’t know if that was actually what was needed, but I couldn’t shake it.

It was an incredibly hot day when we went to the apartment complex. People were everywhere clearing rubble and trying to salvage what they could from their homes.

Because I don’t speak Ukrainian, I kept asking Win and Lena, “Ask them what they need. Ask if there’s anything we can do.”

At one point, we met a family trying to recover what remained of their belongings. Lena explained who we were and asked how we could help.

Their response was heartbreaking:
“You can buy us a new apartment.”

We obviously couldn’t do that.

But we kept asking.

A little while later, Lena walked around the corner and found a tent that had been set up to help residents who had lost everything. She asked what they needed.

Their answer:

“Water. As much as you can bring. We just handed out our last bottle.”

Water.

We drove to Metro and bought more than 900 bottles.

When we came back and started handing them out, I was overcome with emotion watching how grateful people were for something so simple.

A bottle of water.

It didn’t replace an apartment. It didn’t undo what had happened. It didn’t fix the enormous loss these families were facing.

But on a hot day, in the middle of the rubble, it was something they needed.

And we could do something about that.

It’s hard to know where to begin.

We came home today with thousands of photos, countless stories, and experiences that are difficult to put into words.

Some moments were heartbreaking. Others were full of hope. There were days spent with children, families who had lost everything, long drives, late nights, air raid sirens, shopping carts overflowing with aid, and conversations we’ll never forget.

We’re realizing we can’t wrap this trip into one post.

Over the next few weeks, we’d like to slow down and share the people we met, the places we visited, and the moments that reminded us why Hope Across Borders exists. Some stories will make you smile. Others will break your heart. All of them have changed us.

Thank you for following along, praying for our team, and making this work possible. We may be home, but the work in Ukraine continues.

This isn’t the end of our trip. It’s the beginning of telling its story.
