Half-hour Meet & Greet with refreshments, followed by an entertaining, educational guest speaker. Members meet on the second Tuesday of the months between September and June. Each meeting features a speaker or other educational program about gardening. Meetings begin at 12:30 with an informal meet-and-greet session that includes refreshments. After a 30-45 minute presentation beginning at 1:00, b
y a local expert in some gardening topic, reports are heard from the five elected officers and from 10 different committee chairs. There is a raffle of gift bags at each meeting, and a garden quiz with a prize to the winner. The club was founded in 1974, and has a membership of over 80 people. No gardening expertise or experience is required, and members do not need to live in River Bend, although most do. Annual dues are $15. A catered luncheon is held in December and June, instead of meetings those months. The purposes of the club are three: To foster friendships among people with gardening interests; to increase knowledge of indoor and outdoor gardening; and to encourage beautification within the community. The club gives to local charities, works with residents of both Howell Center and River Stone assisted living facilities nearby, participates in home and garden tours, takes day trips to places of historic and horticultural interest, and allows an opportunity for River Bend residents to get to know their neighbors. The Memorial Garden at Town Hall and the planter box at Plantation Square are two of its ongoing beautification projects. Anyone is invited to attend meetings as a guest. Speakers have addressed topics such as landscaping and lawns, container planting, dealing with deer, w**d control, mulching and composting, pollinator gardens, crafts and floral arranging, perennials and bulbs, shrubs and groundcovers, herb gardening, and much more!
