At 6:30 p.m., we invite everyone to join us in-person or login via Zoom to socialize, where guests and members are welcome to discuss their research and learn more ways to find their ancestors.

At 7 p.m., we will present the program "Discover Your Family History with FamilySearch Full Text Search & More!" featuring Genealogist Linda O'Dell. She will share her knowledge and passion for family history utilizing the FamilySearch platform to assist and inspire family members to get involved. She will also demonstrate some aspects of FamilySearch that some people may not be using. Please invite your family and friends to join us for her program.

Linda O'Dell was born and raised in Pennsylvania. She has been married to her husband, John, for 45 years. Together, they have four sons and 12 grandchildren, ranging in age from 24 to 2. Their family have called several places home over the years, including North Carolina, Virginia, and Puerto Rico, but have lived primarily in North Carolina since moving here in 1999.

Her passion for genealogy began about 30 years ago when an aunt gave her a box belonging to her grandmother that was filled with photographs, letters, address books, and notes. Her aunt told her, “I know you will do something with them and not just keep them in a box.” Those words inspired a lifelong love of discovering and preserving family history.

Linda enjoys volunteering at a FamilySearch Center, helping others learn to use FamilySearch and other genealogy resources. One of the most rewarding parts of this work she does is seeing the excitement on someone's face when they discover an ancestor or break through a difficult research “brick wall.”

Family is at the heart of much of what she does. She also loves to cook, which complements her husband's love of eating! Baking pies is especially meaningful to her. Her mother was well known for her baking, and she is proud to carry that tradition forward. Whether she is researching ancestors, helping others uncover their family stories, or baking a pie for her own family, she finds great joy in preserving the memories and traditions that connect generations.

The CCGS members are dedicated to fostering interest in the research, preservation, and sharing of family heritages. We welcome you to join us for this month's meeting. For more information, please visit our updated website at www.CravenGenealogy.org, https://www.facebook.com/CravenGenealogy/, or contact President Nancy Perdue at [email protected] or 252.638.3291.

We also encourage you to visit the New Bern Family Search History Center at the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1207 Forest Drive, New Bern, NC which is open on Tuesday and Wednesday, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. & 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Thursday, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.; Sunday, Monday, Friday and Saturday, By Appointment Only. Other times may be available via appointment by calling Dennis Fitzgerald, 252.349.0005 or Viola Antwine, 252.939.0294. New Bern, Craven County, NC African American Sculpture Installed

I think it costs over $200,000 through a grant from the Reynolds Foundation if I am remembering what I read. It looks somewhat different from the rendering that I saw a couple years ago.

People were upset about the location and some were not happy with the design if I remember correctly. Plus the fact of it costing over $200,000.

To me art is supposed to communicate and this doesn't communicate anything about Catherine Bishir's excellent book "Crafting Lives" about the black artisans of New Bern.
It communicates Beam Me Up Scotty!

It would seem that $200,000 would have been better invested and a more complete story shared in a New Bern African American Museum that a local group has been trying to get going.

Both the City of New Bern, NC Government under Mayor Jeffrey Odham and Craven County NC under Denny Bucher have not done anything to help in opening an African American Museum. Craven County somehow found $9 Million of our Taxpayer Bucks for the Sudan Shrine destruction project.

In North Carolina, the American Revolution looked more like a civil war.
