It’s easy to assume financial hardship only affects people living below the poverty line.

The reality is much more complicated.

A new report from United For ALICE found that more than 1 in 3 Ohio households do not earn enough to afford basic necessities like housing, childcare, food, transportation, healthcare, and utilities.

Many of these households are working. They earn more than the federal poverty level, yet still find themselves making difficult choices between essential expenses.

In Franklin County alone, more than 133,000 households fall below what researchers consider necessary to afford basic living expenses.

At Joseph’s Coat, we see the impact of this every day.

We meet individuals and families who are working hard, caring for their children, and doing their best to stay afloat. For many, access to clothing, furniture, and household essentials helps relieve financial pressure during an already difficult season.

Behind every statistic is a person, a family, and a story.

That’s why our mission continues to matter.

Thank you to the volunteers, donors, churches, and community partners who help ensure our neighbors have access to the resources they need when life becomes difficult.

The need is real, but so is the impact we can make together. If you’d like to learn how you can volunteer, donate, or partner with Joseph’s Coat, comment “HELP” below and we’ll send you more information.

Today, we celebrate the fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers, mentors, and father figures who show up day after day for the people who depend on them.

Whether it’s providing for a family, offering guidance, teaching life lessons, or simply being present, the influence of a caring father can shape lives for generations.

At Joseph’s Coat, we know that strong families help build strong communities. And today, we’re grateful for the men who lead with love, sacrifice, and service, often in ways that go unseen.

Happy Father’s Day to all who make a difference through their care, support, and commitment to others. ♥️

What makes a community strong?

This month, that question is woven throughout our June newsletter.

From a visit to the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota and a powerful reminder that “the strength of a nation begins with the care of its children,” to volunteers serving behind the scenes, leadership development, and preparing resources for future needs, this month’s stories all point to the same truth:

Strong communities are built when people care for one another.

Take a few minutes to read this month’s newsletter and see the many ways volunteers, donors, partners, and supporters are helping make a difference through Joseph’s Coat.

At Joseph’s Coat, we spend a lot of time talking about community. About serving others, showing compassion, and stepping in to help carry one another through difficult seasons.

Memorial Day is a reminder that service often comes with sacrifice.

Today, we pause to honor the men and women who gave their lives serving our country, along with the families who continue carrying that loss long after the ceremonies and flags are put away.

As our community gathers with family and friends this weekend, we hope there’s also space to remember the people whose sacrifice made those moments possible.

From all of us at Joseph’s Coat, thank you to those who served and to the families who continue to carry their memory forward. 🇺🇸

As Memorial Day weekend approaches, Joseph’s Coat will be closed on Saturday, May 23rd to give our volunteers time to rest and be with their families.

We’re incredibly grateful for the people who continue showing up week after week to serve our community with compassion, generosity, and care. Their time and dedication help make this mission possible.

As we pause for the holiday weekend, we also remember and honor those who gave their lives in service to our country.

Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to serving our community next week! 🇺🇸

When housing becomes harder to afford, the effects don’t stop at higher rent.

More people are being pushed into impossible situations.

A new report from Franklin County’s annual Point-in-Time Count found a 43% increase in unsheltered homelessness this year, meaning more people are living outside, in cars, or in places never meant for human habitation.

At the same time, shelter stays are getting longer because affordable housing options remain limited.

That’s the tension many organizations across Central Ohio are seeing right now.

At Joseph’s Coat, we often meet individuals and families carrying the weight of rising costs, housing instability, and difficult transitions all at once. Sometimes what begins as financial pressure quickly impacts every other area of life.

This is why practical support matters.

Clothing. Furniture. Household essentials. Community support. Dignity.

These needs do not exist separately from the larger housing challenges facing our community.

As Central Ohio continues to grow, so does the importance of organizations, churches, volunteers, and neighbors stepping in to care for people in tangible ways.

If you want to be part of that work, here’s how to start:
• Volunteer your time
• Donate clothing or household items
• Give financially to support our mission

When rent takes up more of someone’s income, something else has to give.

That’s what we’re seeing more and more at Joseph’s Coat.

Families walking through our doors who are doing everything they can to keep up, but are feeling the strain of rising housing costs and everyday expenses at the same time.

A new report shows that nearly half of Ohio renters are paying more than 30% of their income on housing, and for many, it’s much higher.

That reality shows up in real ways.

Clothing that gets worn longer than it should.
Furniture that never gets replaced.
Decisions between what’s needed now and what has to wait.

And it’s not because people aren’t trying. In many cases, it’s because there simply aren’t enough affordable options available.

As Central Ohio continues to grow, so does that pressure.

This is where Joseph's Coat of Central Ohio, Inc. steps in.

To help meet practical, everyday needs so families don’t have to carry all of that on their own.

If you want to be part of this, here’s how to start:
• Donate clothing or household items
• Volunteer your time
• Or give financially to help us meet needs every day

Send us a message and we’ll help you take the next step.
