On Thursday afternoon in Marble Hill, between the Bronx and Manhattan, a federal immigration officer shot a man in a car. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at least one officer fired seven rounds. Oscar Belgal, 28, was hit in the neck and reached the hospital in stable condition. His five-year-old son was in the car and was not hurt.

DHS says he was the target of an enforcement operation and that its officers feared for their lives. The NYPD says its footage shows a federal officer at the driver’s window with a gun drawn, and did not capture the shooting. Around 11 p.m., ICE took him from the hospital, and DHS says he is now in a facility outside the state. The shooting is being investigated by Homeland Security Investigations, a part of ICE, with the FBI.

Whatever the government says Mr. Belgal did, he was owed an arrest and his day in court.

ICNA CSJ asks for an investigation outside DHS, by the Manhattan District Attorney and the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division; the release of the officers’ body camera footage; and Mr. Belgal’s return to New York, where his family and the court can reach him.

An immigration judge ruled today that Salah Sarsour, president of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee, can be deported from the country he has lived in for 33 years. He has never been charged with a crime in the United States.

The First Amendment protects everyone here, not only citizens. When a lawful resident can be removed for his advocacy for Palestinian rights, every green card holder learns to watch what they say.

Twenty-five years ago this month, nearly 3,000 people were killed on a single morning. We remember them. We grieve with every family still carrying that loss, and we honor the firefighters, the neighbors, the strangers who ran toward the danger to save people they'd never met.

That day wounded all of America. And in the years that followed, the country was tested again — by what fear can do to a people. Surveillance. Suspicion. Hate crimes that rose and never fully receded. Muslim Americans lived that chapter too, alongside everyone working to make sure "never again" meant for anyone.

But this is also a story of a country that kept choosing each other. Neighbors who showed up. Coalitions built across faiths. Communities that refused to let grief curdle into permanent division. Swipe through a quarter-century most headlines skipped — the hard parts, and the hopeful ones.

Because the truest way to honor the lost is to build the country they deserved: one where no one is judged by the actions of others, and where justice means justice for everyone.

That's the work ICNA CSJ has given decades to. Today we remember together — and we keep building together.
