Not the self-help version. Not positive affirmations in a mirror.
The real thing: the capacity to treat yourself the way you would treat a friend who is going through exactly what you're going through. To stop the internal narration that says you should be further along, handling this better, less affected than you are.
One of the core modules in Restore Your Well-Being is called Self-Compassion is the Bridge. The framing is specific: it's not the destination, it's what gets you from where you are to where you're trying to go. You cannot build from a place of constant self-criticism. The research on this is clear, and anyone who has tried to job search from a place of shame already knows it in their body.
Restore Your Well-Being is Part 1 of Unbroken's foundational series. It draws on neuroscience, self-compassion practice, and somatic tools to help displaced workers move from survival mode toward something that actually feels like solid ground. The Unbroken app is built to go with you through every step.

You feel guilty for sleeping in. For taking a walk when you should be applying. For not having figured it out yet. For feeling angry about something you're supposed to accept gracefully.
Restore Your Well-Being has a module called Guilt is Not Guidance and another called What if Resentment is Trying to Help You? The titles alone say something important: the emotions you dismiss as problems might actually be information.
Resentment, in particular, is one of the most misread signals. People treat it like a character flaw. Something to manage down, apologize for, or push through. But resentment is almost always pointing to a boundary that's been crossed or a value that's being violated. It's not noise. It's data.
This series was co-developed with Kim Paull, and this is the kind of thing that makes her approach different from standard career coaching. She's not trying to make you more productive. She's trying to help you understand yourself well enough to actually move forward.

The professional part is obvious. The title, the income, the daily structure, the colleagues who knew your shorthand.
But that's not all that went. Most people who've been laid off, RIF'd, or lost funding can feel it in places they didn't expect. Something shifts in their body. Their sense of time goes strange. Relationships feel different. The story they'd been telling about who they are and where they were headed stops making sense.
The first module of Restore Your Well-Being is called The Loss is Real, and it does exactly what the name says. It slows down long enough to name what actually happened, not just professionally, but in your body, your relationships, and your sense of self.
This isn't about dwelling. It's about telling the truth so you can build something real from here. That distinction matters more than it sounds.

Job loss is real. It can feel like the floor drops out from under you. There's shock, anger, disbelief, and a feeling of loss that's hard to describe. But you can't stay stuck.
The people using this app are not on a wellness retreat. They are watching their savings. They have mortgages. Some have only a few months of severance left and are counting the weeks.
That pressure is real. Unbroken doesn't ask you to ignore it.
As a first step, pause. Try this: close your eyes, take a slow, deep breath in for 4 counts, hold it for 4 counts, then exhale for 4 counts. Repeat a few times. This simple practice can calm your nervous system and help you regain focus before your next step.
You can't stop entirely. But don't keep moving ahead with a dysregulated nervous system. Fear-based decisions, poor job applications, and underselling yourself in interviews occur when your body is still in free fall.
Unbroken isn't asking you to slow down. It's designed to increase your neurological capacity so you can move faster and more clearly than you would when powered by cortisol and worry.

Most people think losing a job is just a financial problem. Update your résumé, send more applications, network harder. But what many people don’t realize is that job loss can push the brain into survival mode. Stress rises, the nervous system becomes overwhelmed, and clear thinking becomes harder, exactly when people are expected to make major career decisions. Losing a job doesn’t just affect income, it disrupts rhythm, routine, and stability.
That’s why traditional career advice can feel overwhelming right after a layoff. Unbroken Pathways was created to address this gap by focusing not only on career strategy but also on psychological recovery and nervous system regulation, helping people regain clarity, confidence, and direction before rebuilding their careers. Because layoffs don’t define a person, they mark a transition, and with the right support, that transition can become the beginning of something new. Learn more at
