Happy World Children’s Environmental Health Day! 🌎💚

Today, we’re shining a light on an important connection: children’s mental health and their relationship with the natural world. 💡

Middle and high school students are facing an unprecedented mental health crisis with rising concerns around stress, anxiety, and depression. While there is no single solution, spending time outdoors can be a powerful part of the answer. Research suggests that time in nature can help reduce stress, improve mood, encourage physical activity, and foster a greater sense of connection and well-being. 🧠

Imagine a world where every child has the opportunity to explore a forest, discover a stream, climb a hill, or simply experience the freedom of playing outside. These moments matter. Kids deserve the chance to step away from screens, reconnect with themselves and others, and experience joy and wonder of the natural world. 🌳

Join us on the morning of November 12th for our 18th annual State of the Environment breakfast Beyond Four Walls: Helping Kids Find Their Wild! ☕️

Through our new Beyond Four Walls initiative we’re working to equip local youth leaders with the skills and confidence they need to get their kids outdoors. By empowering the adults that work with young people every day, we could create more opportunities for outdoor exploration, play, learning, and meaningful connections with nature. 🌱

Because sometimes, the best classroom has no walls - and the path to well-being starts just outside the door! 🚪➡️🌲🌞

While others debate the best place for leaf peeping in the northeast, over here at Berks Nature we're sure the best view of the fall is of the rainbow of leaves in our gratitude tree - a tribute to our incredible team of volunteers.

Last week, over 70 volunteers representing watershed associations, Berks Nature Ambassadors, the Reading Conservation Corps, and more gathered on The Rookery deck and, overlooking a gorgeous autumn golden hour, celebrated a year of giving. From tree plantings and stream monitoring, to field trips and litter clean ups, Berks Nature's volunteers are making the world a better place not just for us, but for you, for wildlife, and for generations to come.

Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day!

BerksNature joins in celebrating the history, culture and current presence of the Lenape people in Delaware River Valley, where we aid in stewarding our trails and preserves.

The history of the land will always walk with us on every hike, in every forest, and through every stream bank. We are proud to take a moment to share our lands’ heritage today as is part of our mission and is ingrained in our values.

Enjoy today, and never stop exploring the natural world around you!

This past Saturday, Berks Nature had the opportunity to participate in A Walk in Penn’s Woods, an annual statewide event that invites people to get outside, explore Pennsylvania’s forests, and learn more about the history, ecology, and management of our woodlands. 🌱

Berks Nature partnered with Carl Martin, Director of Property Stewardship at Wildlands Conservancy, to give local landowners and visitors a behind-the-scenes look at the woodlands of Berks Nature’s Dent-Gundry Wildlife Sanctuary in Rockland Township.

The property was donated to Berks Nature by Connie Dent and Anne Gundry, with the vision that this special piece of land would remain protected for generations to come. Today, that protection is strengthened through conservation easements held by both Berks Nature and Wildlands Conservancy, ensuring that the property will be conserved in perpetuity.

During the walk, participants learned about the history of the property, the circumstances surrounding its donation, and Berks Nature’s plans for its future. We also discussed the ongoing work to diversify approximately 200 acres of forestland, with the goal of creating a healthier and more resilient woodland that provides greater benefits for wildlife and future generations.

Most importantly, the event gave people an opportunity to simply take a walk in the woods. To be active, ask questions, learn something new, and gain a better understanding of the work that goes into caring for protected lands.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, and to Carl and Wildlands Conservancy for partnering with us on this special event!

Happy World Rivers Day!

Our rivers and streams are important to our communities, wildlife, and the health of our environment.

At Berks Nature, the volunteers in four Watershed Associations work to monitor, protect, and restore our local waterways, while helping people learn more about the streams and rivers in Berks County.
