Alabama farmers may qualify for an exemption from utility taxes on electricity and natural gas used in poultry houses, commercial greenhouses, pivot irrigation systems and commercial catfish aeration systems! The exemption took effect Sept. 1.

Farmers must obtain a Form STE-3 Utility Tax Certificate of Exemption from the Alabama Department of Revenue and provide a properly completed copy to their electric or natural gas provider.

Congratulations to Elijah Griggs!

DeKalb County native and Auburn University student Elijah Griggs received a $2,000 scholarship from the Alabama Farmers Agriculture Foundation and the DeKalb County Farmers Federation (DCFF). Griggs was recognized during the Alabama Farmers Federation scholarship reception Sept. 21 at Lazenby Farms in Auburn. Griggs is a junior studying poultry science with a production concentration. With heavy hearts, we share the passing of one of our cherished board members, Thomas Ridgeway.

Thomas was so much more than a board member. For more than 20 years, he was a mentor, a dedicated public servant, and, most importantly, a friend. His commitment to agriculture, farm safety, and public safety was evident in everything he did, but it was his genuine care for the people around him that made him truly special.

Thomas was a devoted husband, father, and friend who gave generously of his time and knowledge. He always had a way of making people laugh. His quick wit, stories, and infectious personality will be among the things we remember and miss most.

Throughout his years of service to our community and organization, Thomas held numerous positions on our board, on Alfa state committees, and served on the Alfa Young Farmers State Committee. His leadership, wisdom, and dedication left a lasting mark on our organization and on the many lives he touched along the way.

We are incredibly grateful for his more than two decades of service, friendship, laughter, and commitment. Thomas made a difference not only through the work he did, but through the relationships he built, and the lives he touched. His legacy will continue to live on through the people and communities he served.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Thomas’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him during this difficult time.

Rest in peace, Thomas. We thank you for your service, friendship, and laughter. You will be missed. We know the fields in heaven will be in good hands with you taking care of them.

Visitation & funeral will be held at W.T. Wilson Funeral Chapel on Wednesday September 16th.
The family will receive visitors from 1-4PM with the funeral services starting at 4PM.

Harvest season is here, which means you’ll be seeing more combines, tractors, trailers, and other farm equipment traveling on our roads.

Please slow down, stay alert, and give farm equipment plenty of room. These large machines may be moving slowly, making wide turns, or taking up more than one lane.

Don’t try to pass unless it’s safe and legal.
Watch for equipment entering and exiting fields.

Madden Ragan of DeKalb County made the Final Four in the statewide Young Farmers Discussion Meet held during the Alabama Farmers Federation Farm & Land Conference in Mobile Aug. 8. Discussion Meet simulates a committee meeting where participants discuss solutions to agricultural issues.

A credit manager at GreenPoint Ag, Ragan will compete for the state title, plus a prize package sponsored by First South Farm Credit, during the Federation’s annual meeting in December. As a finalist, she received a Turtlebox speaker from the Federation.
