He didn’t retreat. He switched ships.

During the Battle of Lake Erie, Oliver Hazard Perry’s flagship, the USS Lawrence, was heavily damaged and largely disabled under British fire.

Instead of falling back, Perry crossed open water under enemy fire to the USS Niagara and continued the fight.

That decision helped secure one of the most important victories in American history.
