Paws on the Ground, Noses to the Wind! 🐾🌲

Yesterday evening, Elk Run Search Team 30 partnered with Indiana Borough for an intensive and windy joint K9 training session.

Our handler and K9 teams hit the field to sharpen two critical search
disciplines:

🟡 Mantrailing: Tracking specific human scent trails over challenging terrain.

🟡 Airscent: Catching windborne scents to locate missing individuals in large areas.

🐾 Dedicated handlers and K9s from Elk Run Search and Rescue put in serious work last week!

Our team participated in multiple intensive K9 training sessions throughout the week to keep our skills sharp and improving with every opportunity to learn.

Monday Fun Day! 💛

We’re nose booping into a new week following weekend training! Enjoy the silly side of our K9s and their nose booping 🐾

K9 Toby was ready for a mud puddle after completing his trail. 😅 Working warmer days helps our K9s prepare for summer training.

🐾 TRAINING UPDATE: K9 DUKE & HANDLER HALEY 🐾

The focus was all about airscent foundation work and building confidence. Duke tackled a brand-new challenge: navigating a creek crossing. Moving across water and uneven wet terrain can be intimidating for any search dog, but Duke trusted his handler and pushed right through.

Every new environment builds a stronger, more resilient search team. We are so proud of the hard work, trust, and dedication Haley and Duke put into their training to work towards certification.

Handler Haley stated, ‘Never did I think I’d be out here, let alone crossing a creek with my dog!’. She’s getting it done with dedication 💪🏻

🐾 TRAINING UPDATE: BUILDING SOLID FOUNDATIONS 🐕‍🦺

Last night, K9 Diego and Handler Devin hit the woods for some serious skill-building.

🌲The focus of the session was clear:
🟡 Solidifying airscent foundation 💨
🟡 Building operational confidence 💪
🟡 Conquering complex terrain ⛰️

A major highlight of the evening was mastering a challenging creek crossing. Diego and Devin showed incredible teamwork, focus, and trust to navigate the water safely. Every training session like this ensures our team is sharp, confident, and ready when the call comes.

Great work, Devin and Diego! Keep pushing boundaries. 👏

Milestone alert for Elk Run Search Team 30! 🐾

Join us in celebrating K9 Duke and K9 Haley! These incredible tracking teams just unlocked a major milestone in their operational training. 🚀

During our recent training sessions, both K9s pushed their limits and excelled at:

🟡 Strengthening airscent foundations to ensure razor-sharp indications.

🟡 Increasing area coverage to search larger zones faster and more efficiently.

Search and rescue work requires endless dedication, and these handlers and their K9 partners are putting in the hours to stay mission-ready for our community. We are incredibly proud of their growth, focus, and teamwork! 💛

🐾 New Milestone Unlocked! 🐾

Handler Emily and K9 Toby are officially gearing up for their biggest challenge yet: Mantrailing Certification in Fall 2026! 🍁

K9 Toby and Handler Emily completed their first mile long trail, across multiple surface changes, toppled with a load of distractions across urban and wooded trail area, and aged approximately 2 hours. AND?…… SUCCESS! This team duo did it! We had no doubts 💛

Mantrailing requires intense focus, deep trust, and serious stamina. Toby will be learning to pick up a single scent article and track that specific human trail through complex environments, ignoring all distractions. Emily will be mastering the art of reading Toby’s subtle body language and managing the long line like a pro.

Over the next few months, this dynamic duo will be hitting the trails in rain, shine, woods, and urban streets to perfect their bond and sharpen Toby's nose with more distractions and twists and turns to be added in the near future.
They have a lot of hard work ahead, but we know they are ready to crush it!

🚨 BREAKING: SOCIAL MEDIA ADMIN FOUND ALIVE (BUT IN BIG TROUBLE) 🚨

While the rest of the Pennsylvania search and rescue community was out in the woods actually doing their jobs, the social media team at Elk Run Search Team 30 was apparently trapped under a heavy pile of blanket rubble pile, completely missing National Search and Rescue Week 2026 (May 16–22).

Since we forgot to post about them during the official SAR week, please enjoy this heavily delayed, deeply apologetic shoutout to the handler and K9 heroes of May 2026:

🟢 K9 Echo & Rocky Grove K9 SAR: Massive congratulations to handler Marie and K9 Echo from Rocky Grove K9 SAR for their incredibly successful find during a critical search callout in Crawford County! Echo proved once again that good noses make for fast finds.

🟠 Northwest Pennsylvania K9 Search and Rescue: A huge round of applause to the volunteer absolute legends over at Northwest Pennsylvania K9 Search and Rescue for their own incredible, life-saving find this month. (By the way, if you want to support people who actually look at calendars, go register for their Get Lost 5k coming up on June 6th!)

🌲 Meanwhile, Back at Elk Run Team 30...

We did manage to heavily train and prepare for deployment scenarios, even if our communications department is completely lost in the sauce.
