HAPPY EARTH DAY? "Never use Amazon again. Never buy another Apple product. De-Google. Take as much money as you can out of the big banks. Put it into credit unions. Only support small businesses as much as possible. Start using cash as much as possible. And step by step, we can shut down this contraption that was designed in the 1700s, for extraction, exploitation, and permanent war."

IDAHO & MONTANA EXXONMOBIL MEGALOADS 11 YEARS LATER:
"The Spill Heard Round the World: 2023

In February 2023, the [Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation] community learns what [ExxonMobil Canadian subsidiary] Imperial Oil has known for nine months: 5.3 million litres of contaminated wastewater -- a mixture of bitumen, heavy metals, naphthenic acids, and other toxic compounds -- have been seeping from the Kearl Mine into the surrounding environment, eventually draining toward the Athabasca River system.

The fine: $50,000.

ACFN Chief Allan Adam calls it what it is: an environmental catastrophe that was covered up. Premier Danielle Smith dismisses it, claiming the release had no effect on local waterways or wildlife.

In April of the same year, a separate incident: approximately six million litres of water spill from a Suncor settling pond into the Athabasca River.

Both incidents produce the same response from Alberta: cleanup is underway, no confirmed impacts to wildlife or waterways, monitoring continues."

Please support Indigenous Insider journalist Brandi Morin and her ongoing work to expose the heinous injustices inflicted by tar sands mining on Native, northern Alberta residents!
