Nico, Elise, and Rena, a CCC team from Portsmouth High School, created "Love and Patience," a subscription service designed to foster connection within families of people diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

One team member shared, "I remember a lot about this day and this project because I cared about it so much."

With DCN, students can connect personally with design challenges that build passion and foster deeper engagement in the classroom. Because of this, students care more about their work, dive further into research, and retain the lessons taught that will last them a lifetime.

Take a look at this winning team’s product from our 2026 Community Changemaker Challenge!

A team from The Derryfield School created “SwingVibe” a wearable arm-swing training device aimed to help people with Parkinson’s, stroke-related gait impairments, and other mobility challenges improve their walking.

Studies show that by giving students real-world problems it not only makes them more engaged in the classroom but also increases their skills in critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, communication, and self-directed learning.

Through DCN, students solve problem-based challenges they care about and are given the opportunity to investigate the problem, collaborate with others, develop potential solutions, and present their ideas to a panel of judges.

That’s why PBL is at the heart of Design Challenge Network. By giving students this opportunity, DCN helps them build the skills they need to succeed beyond the classroom and into their future.

💡Presentation Skills: confidently communicating their own ideas and solutions.

💡Thinking on Their Feet: responding thoughtfully when asked questions and navigating the unexpected.

The skills that students build with DCN will not only help them in school but in college, careers, and into helping their community long after the design challenge ends.

“Students are a bigger part of the community than before.”💡

Just as this 10th grade student from Governor’s Academy put it, having “many different ideas” put into perspective how much students are able to change the world.

Real-world design challenges give students not just an opportunity to solve a problem they care about but also, a chance to collaborate, share ideas, and see how their voices can make an impact in their communities.
