PTSD Awareness Month – Behind The Badge Project

June is PTSD Awareness Month.

For many first responders, the calls end, the shift ends, and the uniform comes off—but some of the things we’ve seen, heard, and experienced stay with us long after the job is done.

The Behind The Badge Project was created to help break the stigma surrounding mental health in the first responder community. We want our police officers, firefighters, EMTs, dispatchers, corrections officers, and veterans to know that asking for help is not a sign of weakness—it’s a sign of strength.

This month, let’s check on one another. Make the phone call. Send the text message. Have the conversation. Sometimes the strongest thing we can do is let someone know they’re not fighting their battles alone.

If you’re struggling, reach out. If you’re doing well, be the support system for someone who isn’t. Together, we can continue changing the culture and reminding people that hope, healing, balance, and recovery are possible.

BREAKING UPDATE: Michigan City police said a LaPorte County sheriff's deputy was shot at Franciscan Health hospital Friday morning. The officer's condition is not known, but police said the suspect is in custody.

EMS Week 2026 runs from May 17–23, with the theme "Improving Outcomes, Together". Led by NAEMT and ACEP, this week honors paramedics, EMTs, and all emergency personnel for their life-saving service. It serves as an opportunity to raise public awareness of the critical role EMS plays in community health.

The year was 1962 President John F Kennedy designated May 15th as Police Memorial Day.
Please take a moment and remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Establishment: In 1962, President Kennedy signed a joint resolution establishing May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which it falls as National Police Week.
