What can “dead” stars reveal about the history of planetary systems?

According to new research led by Hertz Fellow Aster Taylor (University of Michigan) and Dang Pham (University of Colorado Boulder), the answer may be: much more than we thought.

Their study suggests that white dwarfs—the dense remnants of Sun-like stars—may be consuming asteroids, comets, and even planets at far higher rates than previously estimated. By analyzing the elements these stars absorb, astronomers can uncover hidden clues about the composition, evolution, and ultimate fate of planetary systems—including insights that may one day help us better understand the future of our own solar system. 🪐

Congratulations to Hertz Fellow Kurtis Carsch on being named a 2026 Beckman Young Investigator! 🎉

Kurtis, an assistant professor of chemistry at the College of Natural Sciences, College of Natural Sciences, UT Austin, is one of just 12 early-career researchers nationwide selected for this prestigious award from the Arnold and Mabel Foundation.

Inspired by the highly selective transport systems found in nature, Carsch’s lab is developing synthetic materials designed to sort molecules with remarkable precision, helping address longstanding challenges in separation science. This work could lead to more efficient approaches for chemical manufacturing, energy production, and environmental sustainability.

Join us in congratulating Hertz Fellows Milena Chakraverti-Wuerthwein and Daine Danielson, who were recognized during the University of Chicago’s commencement ceremony last week! 🎓✨

From the microbial to the cosmic, their research couldn’t be more different—yet both have pushed the boundaries of what physics can reveal about our world. Milena’s research brought together physics and theoretical ecology to better understand how changing environments shape microbial communities. Meanwhile, Daine’s work explored gravitationally mediated entanglement and quantum effects near black holes, advancing our understanding of some of the universe’s deepest mysteries.

We’re excited and proud to have been part of their academic journeys, and we look forward to seeing where their curiosity, creativity, and scholarship take them next.
