Congratulations to Hertz Fellow Kurtis Carsch on being named a 2026 Beckman Young Investigator! 🎉

Kurtis, an assistant professor of chemistry at the College of Natural Sciences, College of Natural Sciences, UT Austin, is one of just 12 early-career researchers nationwide selected for this prestigious award from the Arnold and Mabel Foundation.

Inspired by the highly selective transport systems found in nature, Carsch’s lab is developing synthetic materials designed to sort molecules with remarkable precision, helping address longstanding challenges in separation science. This work could lead to more efficient approaches for chemical manufacturing, energy production, and environmental sustainability.

Congratulations again, Kurtis, on this well-deserved recognition. We look forward to seeing where your research leads next! 👏

Join us in congratulating Hertz Fellows Milena Chakraverti-Wuerthwein and Daine Danielson, who were recognized during the University of Chicago’s commencement ceremony last week! 🎓✨

From the microbial to the cosmic, their research couldn’t be more different—yet both have pushed the boundaries of what physics can reveal about our world. Milena’s research brought together physics and theoretical ecology to better understand how changing environments shape microbial communities. Meanwhile, Daine’s work explored gravitationally mediated entanglement and quantum effects near black holes, advancing our understanding of some of the universe’s deepest mysteries.

We’re excited and proud to have been part of their academic journeys, and we look forward to seeing where their curiosity, creativity, and scholarship take them next.

Help us celebrate Milena and Daine by congratulating them on this milestone in the comments below! 🎉 💬

🦷 What if your next dental assistant was a robot?

From the ocean floor to the dentist’s office, Hertz Fellow Soy Choi sees robotics as a tool for amplifying human expertise.

Learn how her research at Stanford and her company, Dentronic, are developing AI-powered robots that can feel—and how those breakthroughs are helping tackle labor shortages in dentistry, expand exploration in environments too dangerous for humans, and reshape what’s possible when people and machines work together.

Why does the universe look the same in every direction? 🌌 👀

Hertz Fellow Daine Danielson and his coauthors — Bruno Alexandre, Stephon Alexander, and David Spergel — have a new take on this longstanding problem.

In a paper just posted to arXiv, the team proposes that the universe's smoothness ("isotropy") may be built into the laws of quantum gravity themselves. Their math shows that an early universe with lopsided or stretched-out shapes is extremely unlikely — while a smooth, evenly expanding cosmos is the natural result. Notably, this only works if space curves back on itself like the surface of a sphere.

Congratulations to Daine and his coauthors! 👏

On Memorial Day, we honor the brave individuals who gave their lives in service to our country and reflect on the freedoms their sacrifice has made possible. 🇺🇸

At the Hertz Foundation, we are privileged to support Fellows who push the frontiers of science and technology and embody a deep commitment to serving the nation through innovation, research, and, in many cases, military service.

Today, join us to remember those we’ve lost, honor those who have served, and salute those who continue to protect and defend our future, both in uniform and in the lab.
