Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Pittsburgh

Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Pittsburgh Our mission is to promote harmonious relations & understanding. In 1939, Edgar J.

At the same time that Jews living in Germany were increasingly threatened by Hitler's anti-Semitic policies during the 1930s, many American Jews were fighting anti-Semitism in the United States through community building and public awareness. Kaufmann (1885-1955), a civic leader and owner of Kaufmann's Department Store, helped establish the Jewish Public Relations Council, later renamed the Jewish

Community Relations Council. Initially, the Council brought together local leaders from B'nai B'rith, the American Jewish Committee, the American Jewish Congress, Jewish War Veterans, and the Jewish Labor Committee to coordinate efforts to defend the Jewish community against anti-Semitism, improve community relations throughout Pittsburgh, and to help shape public policy pertaining to fair housing and labor issues. The Jewish Community Relations Council joined with the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh to assist in fundraising and, today, continues as a part of the Federation with the mission to promote equal rights and social justice for all.
