John Kara is a Wood Craftsman, his business Kara Wood Designs has been creating wonderful woodwork for over 20 years. All of the shapes and patterns are original designs done by John Kara. The business started in the early 1990's and consisted strictly of collapsible baskets.

Years later, John got the idea to angle-cut different shapes such as angels, trees and crosses. Since then, the business has evolved into what you see here today.

Recently his son, Eric Kara, has started his own branch of the business. Both John's and Eric's wives, Carol and Rebecca, also assist in the production and sale of the products.

Kara Wood Designs can be found all over the world but especially up and down the East coast of the U.S. The business is based out of Southwestern Pennsylvania, 30 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

The work CGP Pottery Artist, Peggy Quinn is primarily wheel thrown, often with hand modeled additions and handles that add an imaginative and very distinctive style. Many of her pieces feature the natural world in the form of hand painted motifs and sculptural additions or carvings.

Her pottery is also heavily influenced by simple elegant pottery forms from China. Likewise, the glazes tend to be elegant and subtle. Her glazes are all mixed from the potter’s raw materials offering a quiet elegance that tend to enhance the forms themselves.

Peggy’s clay studio is in East Springfield, PA nestled in her backyard pole barn. She is the proud recipient of a $2000 Creative Entrepreneurial Accelerator Program Grant from Erie Arts and Culture. She is excited to now be a juried member in The Craftsman’s Guild of Pittsburgh. Her work is shown in Erie PA at Kada Gallery and in Pittsburgh at Contemporary Craft. www.peggyquinnclaystudio.com

Julie Zaichuk-Ryan is a Pittsburgh native and maker of traditional-meets-modern quilts, wall hangings, and ready-to-frame art pieces. First drawn to beautiful fabrics and colors, she formed a specialty in handwork over that time: embroidery, hand-sewing, and hand-quilting.

Julie sews as much as possible by hand for the very reason that some wouldn’t: it’s slow work that cannot be mass-produced, and allows the unique shape of the stitches to shine. They create a direct line between her work and the generations of women who made their own stitches before us. She honors their work, often overlooked, by bringing these skills into the modern home.

Julie lives and works in Friendship, teaches sewing classes locally, and repairs quilts to preserve the legacy of the stitches that informed our tradition. https://www.southatlanticstitchingcompany.com/

Fused Glass Artist, Bobby Harr, tells us that he uses Dichroic glass to create the vibrant colors in his glass art. The properties of this glass cause it to change colors as light moves across it. Like the desert sky at dusk, he blends unusual combinations of these ever changing hues to create his pieces. He finds it interesting that glass is made mostly of silica, which like my desert is sand.

Bobby’s work has been in over 200 Galleries & Shops across the US and Canada including The Jewish Museum in NYC and the Skirball in LA. He has taught Fused Kiln Formed Glass to over 900 students in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area.

At 2023 Fair In Park meet Lisa Arkus, Whimsical Visual Art from Pennsylvania’s Allegheny Mountains.

“As a self-taught artist, I use my own techniques and imagination to create my art. A combination of paints, pens, vintage papers, and other ephemera are used on my canvases to create my stories.
Youth, innocence, and nature are themes that are prevalent in my work. My home is in the Allegheny Mountains and under the darkest skies on the East Coast. My surroundings often make their way into my artwork in the form of flying saucers and broad skies full of life. Cats, rabbits, and other creatures wearing dresses add an element of surrealism and child-like nostalgia to my work.

Hello! Today we are sharing participating artist and sculptor Kathleen Lapso and her vibrant metal work that she likes to call “Jewelry for Walls.”

Katheleen joins us in September at our annual A Fair In The Park with many of our Guild Members at Mellon Park on the 2nd weekend of September from Friday 9/8 - Sunday 9/10.

“I am a second generation metal sculptor. My father was also a metal sculptor and I started going to shows with him when I was 8 years old. I learned to weld when I was 12 and worked in his studio throughout my teenage years.

In 1985, as a hobby I started a line of jewelry and had my first art show. In time, the work grew larger and larger into what it is today.

Many of my sculptures can be found in Marriott Hotels, doctor/dentist offices and other commercial locations besides countless private homes. I create my sculptures using copper, aluminum, brass, and bronze, and weld them with an oxygen/acetylene torch. All the colors are created using many patinas, dyes, paints and heat. I can’t draw worth a darn, but I absolutely love designing and I feel that I bring a feminine touch to metalwork. I do all my own designing, metal work, matting and framing. No assistants or apprentices are used. Home visits are available for experiencing my work in your home. Thank you for your interest in my work. I am truly blessed to be able to do something that I love. Living life to the fullest!

Mellon Park is located in Pittsburgh, on the edges of the Squirrel Hill and Point Breeze neighborhoods along Fifth Avenue, Shady Avenue, and Beechwood Blvd.
