Big skills. Little horses. One unforgettable summer highlight!

Southern Peaks Regional Treatment Center wrapped up summer with the first-ever SPRTC Mini Rodeo, putting the skills they’ve gained through equine-assisted experiential learning into action!

Through Project Mini Angel Eyes, youth have been building confidence, perseverance, problem-solving skills, and meaningful connections—all alongside some pretty special four-legged partners. During the rodeo, families watched proudly as youth guided the mini horses through water walking, obstacle courses, and even a little posing for the crowd.

And just as important as the skills they demonstrated was the support they showed one another—cheering on teammates, celebrating successes, and building confidence together.

Bike riding was recently introduced at Abraxas I ARMHS Program as an opportunity for exercise, recreation, and fun. But not every young person comes to us knowing how to ride, and that makes moments like this even more meaningful.

After some difficult tries, one of our young men rode across the gym multiple times with minimal assistance and eventually made it down the walkway on his own. Even more impressive was his ability to stay focused through the setbacks, regroup, and keep trying.

Today he learned more than how to ride a bike. He experienced what can happen when you keep going even when something is hard.

Sometimes growth is simply finding your balance and realizing you can keep going.

The thrill. The fear. The first step.

It's the exhilaration of reaching the platform. The anticipation of how far you'll make it across the course. The trust you place in the person holding your safety rope from the ground. The courage it takes to start climbing—and the courage to keep going when it feels uncomfortable.

But the greatest growth happens beyond the ropes. It's leading a teammate through safety checks, cheering them on when they're struggling, respecting their decision to keep going, or to come down, and discovering strengths you didn't know you had.

It's fun. It's challenging. It can be uncomfortable. It's leadership. It's resilience. It's becoming someone beyond who you thought you were.

That's the power of experiential learning at Abraxas.

Learning goes beyond the classroom!

Abraxas Youth Center spending the day in Michaux State Forest cleaning primitive campsites, clearing overgrown vegetation, and stacking firewood. Along the way, they learned about snake safety, native plants, the water cycle, and forest management.

Building skills, serving the community, and connecting with nature—one experience at a time.🌲
