The Open Door, Inc.

The Open Door, Inc. The Open Door provides supportive housing and related services to help meet people where they are at. The first resident moved in June 1, 2006.

A Brief History

In late 2004, a group of concerned citizens conducted a focus group of six homeless individuals living with HIV. The response was clear; housing was the main barrier to medical appointment and medication adherence. The results from the focus group were presented to other key staff members from the region’s leading AIDS Service organizations in January 2005, who later became our f

ounding board members. By April 2006, the founding members purchased a 15-unit apartment building. Since our inception, The Open Door, Inc. has provided housing to over 75 people living with HIV. We have never had a vacant apartment, demonstrating the need for this type of program. We currently house 14 individuals and provide representative payee services to over 50 clients, including residents, and hope to continue expanding. We work every day to empower our clients to live independently, improve their health and quality of life, and ultimately improve their roles in the community. Our program builds on three key strategies:

Housing First: The “housing first” model prioritizes housing before all other goals so that once people are stably housed they can feel comfortable about taking charge of their health and lives. Harm Reduction: Meaning we do not require abstinence to be in our program. We meet clients "where they are at" and utilize a client centered approach. Peers: These paid staff members are themselves living with HIV and/or in recovery, and are directly aligned with the health care and social service systems that clients need. In addition to these three strategies, The Open Door, Inc. provides a multitude of services to ensure our clients have a successful transition into stable housing and continue to maintain stable housing. The services offered are:

• Permanent and transitional housing
• On site staff 7 days a week
• Representative Payee Services
• Medication Monitoring
• Case Management referrals
• Substance abuse treatment referrals
• Educational classes
• Support groups
• Mental health referrals
• Homemaker & home health aide services
• Transportation
• Congregate meals
• Quality of life events provided both inside the house and outside in the community

We’re honored that The Open Door, Inc. was highlighted as a best-practice program in a recent report from the Pennsylvania State Epidemiological Outcomes Workgroup examining housing access for people who use drugs across Pennsylvania.

The report emphasizes the importance of low-barrier housing programs that meet people where they are without requiring sobriety as a condition of shelter.

For over 20 years, The Open Door has provided supportive housing and services for people living with HIV who are experiencing housing instability. Our transitional housing program combines stability with supportive services so residents can move toward long-term housing, improved health, and greater independence.

We’re proud to be included among programs advancing low-barrier housing solutions that prioritize dignity, safety, and stability.

We have made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s Run Amok: End of Summer Bash, originally scheduled for Saturday, August 23rd at the Schenley Park Visitors Center.

While we’re disappointed not to gather with our community this summer, this choice allows us to focus our energy on other important initiatives to support individuals living with HIV in Southwestern Pennsylvania.

We are so grateful for the incredible sponsors, partners, and community members who have already committed to joining us. If you purchased a ticket or committed to sponsorship, we’ll be reaching out directly with next steps.

Thank you for your continued support of The Open Door, Inc.—together, we’ll keep creating safe, affirming spaces for our community to thrive. Stay tuned for future opportunities to connect! 💛

We are incredibly grateful to the Trexler-Solomon Family for organizing a food drive in support of The Open Door, Inc.! 🙂

Thanks to their generosity, we were able to restock our food cupboard at our transitional housing building, ensuring that our participants have access to emergency food items when needed. At TOD, we prioritize the health and well-being of our residents, and this support makes a real difference!

If your workplace, club, school, or community group is interested in organizing a food drive to support those we serve, please reach out to Thomas at [email protected]. Your support is greatly appreciated!
