Heartfelt Thoughts – Love and Generosity Always Win

As another fiscal year closes at Yates Fund for Cancer Hope, we pause to reflect on you—our incredible Cindystock family.

Because of your kindness, Cindystock was able to donate over $34,000 this year to local agencies that provide:

* Cancer screening tests for individuals who might otherwise go without early detection

* Support services that help patients and families navigate treatment, care, and recovery

You came together at Cindystock 22 and filled the yard with joy—listening to wonderful music, sharing delicious food, laughter, prizes, and friendship. You watched a very special pierogi race, as the grandchildren of our dear friend Mike—whose story helped inspire Cindystock—took the field. You saw one of the tiny girls we helped a few years ago dancing in the water mist, full of life and hope. Tears flowed again during our candlelight ceremony, as we honored cancer survivors and remembered those we’ve lost.

Because of moments like these, and because of you, our total contributions over 22 years have now surpassed $548,000.

Throughout the year, you gave in so many ways—making donations, purchasing Henry Diltz Photography books as meaningful gifts, and offering your time, energy, and words of encouragement. Every act of generosity, no matter the size, has helped someone facing cancer feel less alone.

We are proud to say that 100% of the funds raised go directly toward cancer screening tests and support services for anyone in need, regardless of health insurance.

This is the face of su***de loss.

My beautiful son, Max. This photo was taken when he was about 9 months old and I just love his sweet round belly, his large bald head, and his soulful, big brown eyes.

We lost him in 2020 at the age of 25, and my life changed in the blink of an eye.

I recently heard of a Hawaiian prayer to say when someone is dying. It is to help with forgiveness and letting go. You simply say:

“I love you ….”
“Thank you…”
“I forgive you…”
“Please forgive me…”

I thought I’d give it a shot with my Max even though he’s already gone.

“I love you, my sweet boy. I thank you for making me a mom and for the honor of being your mother – it’s been one of the greatest joys of my life. I forgive you for leaving me because I know the pain you had was unbearable. Please forgive me for not helping you more and for the many mistakes I made as a parent. Love was always my goal and my guiding principle.”

As I write these words, I am weeping.

Losing a child is devastating. Losing a child to su***de is even difficult because of the guilt I’ve felt, and the stigma of su***de loss. I know firsthand the judgement associated with losing a child to su***de.

If you’ve lost a child, I want you to know you’re not alone. If you’ve lost a child to su***de, please know I understand your pain, your confusion, your regret, and I’m here to help.

Please reach out for support. I offer online support groups for grieving parents, books, and other resources to help you in your grief and healing journey.
