A big congratulations to our own Dayna Brown for finishing third in her age group at the Patriots 5K!

Organized by Semper Fi Mission, the Patriots 5K brings the community together to raise awareness of veteran mental health and su***de prevention while supporting scholarships for children of veterans lost to su***de.

Members of our board were also on hand, connecting with participants and sharing the mission of Friends of the Pittsburgh Fisher House.

We’re grateful to the organizers for bringing our community together in support of veterans and their families, and especially proud of Dayna for her great finish!

For families staying at the Pittsburgh Fisher House, days are often spent moving between two very different places.

On one side of these doors is the hospital, with appointments, treatments, conversations with doctors, and the uncertainty that can come with medical care.

On the other is a home. A place to make dinner, wash clothes, sit down for a while, or simply close the door and rest.

The distance between the two is only a few steps. And when someone you love is receiving care, those few steps can make all the difference.

We recognize the 106th anniversary DAV, an organization founded in 1920 by disabled veterans determined to ensure their fellow veterans received the care, benefits, and support they had earned. Today, DAV continues that work for veterans and their families across the country.

That mission has a special connection to ours. At the Pittsburgh Fisher House, we see every day how medical care affects not only the veteran receiving it, but the family standing beside them. We are grateful to the DAV chapters whose financial support helps make our mission possible.

We’re proud to join in recognizing more than a century of DAV’s service to veterans and their families.

Last week marked the 79th birthday of the United States Air Force, established September 18, 1947.

We’re proud to support Air Force veterans and families, along with military and veteran families from every branch of service, when medical care brings them to Pittsburgh.

To the Airmen, veterans, and families who have been part of the Air Force story for the past 79 years, Happy Birthday!

A home is about more than the place itself. It’s also the meals shared around the table, the activities that break up a long day, and the people who take the time to make someone feel welcome.

Throughout the year, companies, civic organizations, community groups, and families visit the Pittsburgh Fisher House to do just that. They prepare dinners, host activities and special events, and bring a little bit of normal life to families staying close to a loved one receiving medical care.

Recently, our friends at 84 Lumber Company stopped by to host an ice cream social for our guests. It’s a simple thing, but these are exactly the kinds of moments that help make the Pittsburgh Fisher House a true home away from home.

We’re grateful for every group that walks through the door ready to share a little time and care with our families.

When we say the Pittsburgh Fisher House keeps families close to their loved ones receiving care, we mean it.

The House sits right on the VA medical campus, just steps away from the hospital. That proximity means families can spend less time traveling back and forth and more time where they want to be: with the person they came to support.

They can return to the House for a meal, a shower, a change of clothes, or a few hours of rest, knowing their loved one is still nearby.

Being close makes a real difference.

We’re grateful to the Northwood Charitable Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, for completing its pledge in support of the second Pittsburgh Fisher House.

Their commitment is helping make room for more military and veteran families to remain close to a loved one receiving medical care. When the new House opens, Pittsburgh’s capacity will grow from 10 to 26 families each night.

Thank you to the Northwood Charitable Foundation for investing in this mission and helping us build the next chapter of the Pittsburgh Fisher House.

When someone you love ends up in the hospital, especially unexpectedly, everyday needs can quickly become one more thing to figure out.

Where will you sleep? What will you eat? How will you get clean clothes when you packed for a day and suddenly find yourself staying for a week?

At the Pittsburgh Fisher House, those practical needs are taken care of.

Guests have access to laundry facilities, a fully equipped kitchen, comfortable living spaces, and a private room, all free of charge.

Because when your focus needs to be on someone you love, clean clothes shouldn’t be something you have to worry about.
