Cheers to community, connection, and A Sound Decision. 🍸

Our friends at Balvanera Pittsburgh have created a special cocktail in support of HDS! Made with vodka, cassis, and lemon, A Sound Decision gives back with every sip: $2 from each cocktail sold supports HDS and our work providing services, life skills, and community for people who are Deaf, Deaf-Blind, or hard of hearing.

ASL interpreters help ensure Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals have access to communication, education, healthcare, and opportunity.

Interpreter education programs are essential to building the next generation of professionals who support language access in our communities.

HDS Board Spotlight: Joe Valenti

“I want to help HDS expand its services, eliminate wait lists, have consistent funding, and run compassionately and professionally.”

Meet Joe Valenti, Partner Lawyer and dedicated HDS Board Member of 14 years.

Joseph’s connection to HDS’s mission is deeply personal. Having worn hearing aids since childhood and living with both hearing and vision challenges, he understands firsthand how critical communication access, assistive technology, and supportive services can be.

Professionally, Joseph focuses on white-collar and civil rights law in business and government settings, bringing thoughtful leadership and advocacy to the board.

Through his service, Joseph hopes to help HDS continue expanding access, reducing waitlists, strengthening sustainable funding, and delivering services with both compassion and professionalism.

Fun fact: Joseph’s distinct deep-toned “Southern” voice isn’t from living in the South at all. A lifelong Pennsylvanian, he describes it as a blend of Pittsburgh roots and what he calls his own “deaf accent.”

Thank you, Joseph, for helping advance access, connection, and opportunity across our community.

The City of Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire and the Center for Hearing & Deaf Services recently partnered for a Fire Safety Presentation at DePaul School for Hearing and Speech.

Students watched a fire safety video before Fire Marshal Lisa Epps-Cuda led the children in the Junior Fireman Pledge. HDS Assistive Device Center Director Tazi Hughes also demonstrated flashing/vibrating smoke detector kits and other assistive devices for students and teachers.

As part of the event, 40 flashing and vibrating smoke detectors were distributed to help support accessible fire safety education and awareness.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this meaningful and engaging day possible.
