Over 1,000 members in the Pittsburgh area. Chapter meetings (after Covid), Stream projects, educational efforts, women's group, fly tying.

MEETING REMINDER: Our October PWWTU Meeting is TONIGHT!
Monday, October 12th at 7pm.

We will host the Murrysville Watershed Association and the Turtle Creek Watershed Association to learn more about AMD Remediation Efforts in the Turtle Creek Watershed.

Turtle Creek historically has been plagued with abandoned mine drainage (AMD) and industrial discharges along the creek mainstem, as well as from its tributaries. One of the goals of cleanup efforts by the Turtle Creek Watershed Association and Murrysville Area Watershed Association is restoration of the Turtle Creek watershed for recreational purposes. Melissa Church, MAWA Executive Director, along with Ben Hedin, Associate Director of the TCWA, will discuss the current and planned efforts of these two organizations for AMD remediation and stream cleanup in this local watershed. One major project is a multi-million-dollar and multi-year effort to clean up a significant mine discharge (almost 9,000,000 gallons per day) into Brush Creek, a major Turtle Creek tributary.

MEETING REMINDER: Our September PWWTU Meeting is on Monday September 14th at 7pm. We will be hosting Three Rivers Waterkeeper for a presentation!

Three Rivers Waterkeepers is our watchtower in the fight to protect our drinking water and recreation in the three rivers watershed. They are one of the few organizations with teeth to catch and prosecute companies that pollute and break the clean water act. Heather VanTassel PhD is the executive director and will talk to us about their organization, what they do, some of their most recent wins and how we can support such a dynamic and vital organization

Consider joining us - Monday, August 24th, 2026
from 6–9 PM for our next tying session.

Joining us this month is John Mlakar, he will be sharing some of his favorite fly patterns.

Meet John, an avid angler whose passion for the sport began in college when his friend Mark introduced him to fly fishing-sparked forever by an unforgettable first catch: a steelhead on a 4-weight rod.

While raising two young children, Brooke (5) and Teddy (2), alongside his wife of eight years, Sarah, and their mini golden doodle, Pivo, keeps him a bit too busy to be on the creeks as much as he'd like these days, he channels that same dedication into his craft.

Nowadays, you can usually find him spending his evenings building custom rods and tying flies at his desk. He is also deeply proud to be active with Project Healing Waters, mentoring and supporting disabled veterans through the therapeutic art of fly fishing and community.

Whether he's on the water or at the vise, he is always excited to share his love of the sport with others.

John will be demonstrating 3 steelhead flies, Possie Bu**er, Emerald Shiner and Rabbit Zonker.

This is a great event for new tiers to give fly tying a try!

All Are Welcome!

New fly tyers and those interested in learning about the craft are encouraged to attend. We'll have extra tools and materials for you to try out!

Consider joining us - Monday, July 27th, 2026 from 6–9 PM for our next tying session.

Joining us this month is Sean Kurry, he will be sharing some of his swing fly patterns.

Sean is a lifelong resident of western PA. He began fishing the creeks of the Laurel Mountains at age 8. His parents got him a fly rod at age 11 and he would begin his fly tying journey that same year.

Some of Sean's' favorites are Eastern TN, the Western PA tailwaters and the Great Lakes tributaries. Sean is just as happy to fish a pond for sunfish.

Recently Sean was asked by Project Healing Waters Pittsburgh to be Assistant Program Lead where he can share his joy of fly tying and fly fishing with others.

When Sean isn't fishing he can be found spending time with his wife Jessica and their two very fluffy dogs, Stormie and Ivy.

This is a great event for new tiers to give fly tying a try!
