It is with great sadness that St. Gabriel alumni John Hyrb (’81) and Doug Hyrb (’91) announce the death of their mother, JANET HYRB, who passed away peacefully on Tuesday 8/10/2021, at the age of 84.

Mrs. Hyrb was the St. Gabriel’s Cheerleading Coach from 1974-1995. Appointed by then-Principal Sister Marietta, Mrs. Hyrb led the squads to their first-ever Diocesan Championship within 3 years. During her 21 years as Coach, St. Gabriel’s School won the Diocesan Championship numerous times, despite competing against 30+ other schools each year. For the hundreds of former cheerleaders who remember, Mrs. Hyrb’s favorite move was the staggered “Flying Doves”, which was a frequent high profile “leap of faith” ending to their competition cheers.

Mrs. Hyrb was also known for her beautiful soprano singing voice in St. Gabriel’s Church, where she sang weekly for almost 30 years, as well as for many weddings, funerals, and other special occasions.

Today we closed out the 2020-2021 school year with an all school mass, and for the last time ever, sang the St. Gabriel Alma Mater.

Next year, the school will be known as Mother of Mercy Academy following a merge with St. Elizabeth. The school will remain at the St. Gabriel campus, though unfortunately no longer the St. Gabriel Gators. Despite a name change, we will always strive to carry on the legacy set forth by Fr. Haney of an education second to none.

As we all move on into the next chapter, we will always be...

Our hearts are incredibly full for our amazing St. Gabriel school community, alumni, friends, faculty and staff as well as our devoted Our Lady of Hope parishioners. This year, we were able to raise $31,915‼️

In participating in All In 4 Gabes, with proceeds benefiting the Father Haney Angel Fund, you’ve helped to fund students in need immediately going into next school year.

Father Haney’s influence is strongly felt among the halls, in the pews and around the St. Gabriel community. Listen to how this man’s amazing legacy was viewed through the eyes of those who loved him first- his very own family. How incredibly blessed we are to continue his life’s work and mission.
