One table, one box of markers, and everybody making their own thing.

Kids this age learn the most when they are sitting next to each other. They borrow colors, look over at what somebody else is doing, change their mind about their own, and figure out how to share a table without anybody telling them to.

Nobody grades that, but it is some of the most important learning happening in this room.

On earth as it is in heaven. Sometimes that looks like construction paper and a box of markers.

Backpack still on, homework already started.

Some days they come in from school and go straight to it.

Getting the homework done before the fun part is a habit plenty of grown adults never picked up. Watching a kid do it without being told is a good afternoon.

We Love God. We Love People. We Live Like Jesus. Around here, loving people includes making sure a kid has a quiet table and somebody who will check the work when he is done.

The hours between the last bell and dinner decide a lot.

For some kids those hours are quiet and unsupervised. For ours they look like this. Pencils out, worksheets down, an adult close enough to help the second somebody gets stuck.

Homework help sounds small until you think about what it prevents. A kid who falls behind and quietly decides they are just not a school person will carry that for years. Somebody has to sit down next to them before that decision gets made.

Bible Center built The Maker's Clubhouse so that somebody would always be there.

his is the afterschool crew.

They come in from school, drop their bags, and we get this.

The Maker's Clubhouse is where our kids land after the last bell. Homework gets done. Art gets made. And somebody in the room knows their name and notices when they are not quite themselves.

A kid who knows there is a place expecting them tomorrow walks through the world differently. That is not a small thing to hand a nine year old.

The Maker's Clubhouse is part of The Oasis Project at Bible Center Church.

Before the school year got going, we put on a welcome back lunch for the teachers and staff at Lincoln and Faison.

These are the people our kids see every single day, and a good lunch is the least we can do. The Maker's Clubhouse works because our schools let us be part of what they are already building.

Some days it's a tablet. Some days it's a paintbrush or a robotics kit.

The tool changes. The goal doesn't: give these kids room to figure out what they're capable of.
