We had some really great species turned in for our Breeders Awards Program (BAP) last month, including a very rare livebearer and cichlid! Members got a few really great deals on some of these species during the mini-auction that takes place each meeting.

One of our page followers shared this video of some gorgeous angelfish she picked up at our Spring Auction back in April. She got 4 fish, and 2 have paired off and are producing eggs for her. Thanks Cathy Gates!

You've heard of fish rooms, but have you ever come across a fish tank barn??

The Fish Tank Barn is Mike Howe's 2 story building that hosts a variety of fish species from swordtails, platys, endlers, rare livebearers, rainbowfish, cichlids from lake tanganiyka, lake malawi, and South America.

Mike will be visiting us from Michigan at our August 28th meeting, presenting on his experiences with goodeids, a family of freshwater livebearing fish predominantly native to central Mexico.

Many of these species face severe population declines or extinction in the wild due to water pollution, agricultural runoff, and habitat loss.

- BAP at 50 History -

In 2016, the 40th year of our club's Breeders Award Program, 186 verified spawns were submitted by 29 different club members.

The most popular classes of fish that year were:

1. Killifish (Mop Spawners) - 34 spawns
2. Livebearers - 31 spawns
3. Cichlids (Old World) - 30 spawns

Master Breeder Robin Shemela turned in the most mop-spawning killifish (10 species) and livebearers (6 species).

Jonathan Raviotta turned in the most old world cichlids (11 species).

"I've witnessed hundreds of people come and go in this hobby and basically the reason they quit is the same. Too many failures make tropical fish keeping an expensive proposition so they become bewildered (because they can't get proper help), bored, and completely tired of the whole mess and end up using their aquariums as storage containers.

The other people that quit the hobby are the ones that forget it is a hobby and decide it is time to get rich. Once they finally realize that they are spending 40 hours a week and $80 to make $81 then they also quit."
