Choices for Children - A Program of the Western PA School for the Deaf Choices for Children is an Early Intervention program that provides services for families of deaf and

The Choices for Children program has provided Early Intervention services to families of deaf and hard of hearing infants and toddlers for over 30 years. The experienced, certified teachers are the cornerstones of this primarily home-based program, with regular visits scheduled to home or daycare settings. The Choices staff provide comprehensive and objective information, advocacy, and training in language, audition and speech for infants and toddlers who have a hearing loss. Choices for Children also offers a variety of site-based activities providing opportunities to interact with other parents, share concerns, discuss common issues and develop friendships. Activities such as the Discovery Day playgroup, family workshops, and sign language classes reinforce and enhance the home visits. It was EVERYTHING pumpkin at Music Movement and Me! Our little friends sang, signed, danced and shared stories about PUMPKINS! We learned about the pumpkins grown at the Scranton School garden! We ate pumpkin cookies and (according to one of our Littles - ā€œthey were DEEEEELISHā€)! We had THE BEST time with our friends!

Itā€™s back to school for our NEPA Toddler Group and Fall is in the air! We went on a ā€œFall Walkā€! We practiced our Fall signs/words for things like leaves, pumpkins and corn stalks! We collected leaves which were green, yellow, red and brown. We sang and enjoyed some new learning stations! We ended the morning with a favorite snack!

Our CFC Toddlers were guests of the Abington Community Library at the Electric City Aquarium! We saw Toucans, Sloths, alligators and fish! We met toads, turtles and got to touch a Boa! We LOVED the sting ray touch tanks and had fun with our friends at signed storytime! We are SO LUCKY to have such amazing community partners who make learning fun!šŸ’•šŸ

Fair Week is the BEST week of the year! Our NEPA Toddler Group knows that is true! We visited the Harford Fair today and had the BEST time becoming ā€œFarmers for a Dayā€. Sheep, cows, goats, pigs and even a horse show - could our day get any better?! So much fun and learning packed into a morning! What a special way to end summer!

It was the PERFECT day for our Choices For Children families to have ā€œIce Cream for Breakfastā€! We visited Manningā€™s Dairy Farm - learned some new signs - visited the cows - and ate Ice Cream for Breakfast! What an amazing way to start the day! A special THANK YOU to the Manning family for supporting our learning in such a DELICIOUS way! šŸ’•šŸ¦

On Monday, we had a visitor, Mrs. Tara, from Friends of the Hearing Center at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. We explored sounds bottles and talked about soft and loud sounds. We listened to a story about different hearing devices, including hearing aids and cochlear implants. We practiced some sign language and even got to see a toy stuffed koala bear that was wearing a cochlear implant!

As one of our scholarship recipients, Farah is pursuing neuroscience with a goal of using her personal experience with bilateral cochlear implants to drive change, advocacy, and accessibility in the hearing-loss community.
