This week is National Black Family Cancer Awareness Week, an annual initiative dedicated to raising awareness about the disproportionate impact cancer has on Black families and communities.

The observance highlights the importance of prevention, early detection, equitable access to care, and understanding family cancer history. It also shines a light on the reality that Black individuals often face higher cancer mortality rates and are more likely to receive a late-stage diagnosis.

When a parent is diagnosed with cancer, the impact reaches far beyond the patient. At One Day to Remember, we've seen firsthand how cancer affects the entire family. Children carry worries they don't always know how to express. Caregivers balance endless responsibilities. Families work hard to hold on to normalcy while navigating uncertainty. That's why we believe supporting a parent with cancer means supporting their entire family.

Because cancer care isn't just about treatment.
๐ŸฉตIt's about connection.
๐Ÿ’›It's about support.
๐Ÿ’™It's about creating moments of joy and togetherness in the midst of difficult circumstances.

This National Black Family Cancer Awareness Week, we honor the strength and resilience of Black families facing cancer and reaffirm our commitment to helping families create meaningful memories together.

When a parent is diagnosed with advanced-stage cancer, the impact doesn't stop with the patient. It reaches every corner of a family's life.

Children may carry fears they don't know how to express.

Spouses often become caregivers while trying to hold everything together.

Family routines change. Financial pressures grow. Uncertainty becomes part of everyday life.

After supporting more than 750 families, one thing has become incredibly clear to us: Cancer affects the entire family.

That's why we believe caring for families is not separate from cancer care. It's an essential part of it. When families are supported, connected, and given opportunities to spend meaningful time together, it can strengthen relationships and create resilience during some of life's most difficult moments.

At One Day to Remember, we're committed to helping families create those moments. Because every family deserves time to be a family, even in the midst of cancer.

๐Ÿฆ’๐Ÿง๐ŸฌSome of our favorite memories happen at zoos, aquariums, and aviaries!๐Ÿฆ’๐Ÿง๐Ÿฌ

Over the years, these experiences have become among the most requested outings for the families we serve. From feeding giraffes and meeting penguins to behind-the-scenes encounters with dolphins, sloths, and even hippos, these moments create opportunities for families to laugh, explore, and make memories together.

What makes these experiences so special isn't just the animals.

๐ŸงIt's watching a child light up when a penguin waddles over.
๐ŸฌIt's seeing parents forget about treatments and appointments for a little while.
๐Ÿฆ’It's hearing families talk about these moments long after the day is over.

We're incredibly grateful to the zoos, aquariums, and aviaries across the country that have partnered with One Day to Remember to create extraordinary experiences for our families. Their generosity has helped turn simple outings into lifelong memories.

Because sometimes the most meaningful moments happen when a family gets to experience wonder together!

Some people spend their lives showing up for others. Miguel is one of those people.

An Air Force veteran. A husband of 20 years. A father of four. A culinary chef. A biomedical engineer who dedicated his studies to leukemia research. A man who has spent his life serving, giving, and putting others first.

Today, we're asking our community to do the same for him. Miguel is in home hospice after being diagnosed with stage IV liver cancer.

This Family Night to Remember isn't about the things on the list. It's about creating moments Miguel's family will treasure forever with those things. Moments of laughter. Moments of connection. Moments his wife and children will carry with them long after the night is over.

Miguel has already built a beautiful legacy through a lifetime of service, sacrifice, and love. Now it's our turn to serve him.

When a parent is facing advanced-stage cancer, life can quickly become centered around appointments, treatments, scans, and uncertainty. But years later, we don't want our families talking about waiting rooms.

We want them talking about the zoo trip where everyone laughed until their stomachs hurt โฌ‡๏ธ
๐Ÿ’™The ice cream they shared after dinner.
๐Ÿ’›The silly family photos they took together.
๐ŸฉตThe memories they made as a family.

At One Day to Remember, we believe those are the moments that matter most. Because cancer may become part of a family's story, but it shouldn't be the only thing they remember.

That's why we create opportunities for families to step away from cancer for a day and focus on what matters most: being together!

๐Ÿ’› We want the memories of their One Day to last a lifetime๐Ÿ’™

January 2025, Mike learned he had anaplastic thyroid carcinoma, an aggressive and incurable cancer that had already spread to his liver and bones. He was given six months to live.

Cancer has touched nearly every corner of Mike's life. He lost his mother and two brothers to the disease. In 2021, he learned he carries Li-Fraumeni syndrome, a rare inherited condition that dramatically increases the risk of developing cancer.

When we first met Mike, he told us how much the Pittsburgh Pirates meant to his family and that he wanted to experience all of those things with his son. We began planning an incredible day for them. And it all happened yesterday as he walked out onto the field with his family- not as a patient, not as a diagnosis, just as Mike: A husband. A dad. A Pirates fan.

Meeting Konnor Griffin was a huge highlight who greeted him with custom Pirates jerseys. Sharing stories and laughter with the Pirate Parrot and the Pierogies. Spending time with Bob Nutting. Taking it all in alongside the people who have walked every step of this journey with him.

As the game unfolded, it wasn't really about baseball anymore. It was about making memories together. It was about a family getting a day to set aside appointments, prognoses, and fear and simply enjoy being together.

And when the time came for Mike to throw out the ceremonial first pitch, all of those moments led to a single quiet sentence he whispered to his wife:

"We did it. We made it here."

At One Day to Remember, this is why we do what we do. Because sometimes the most meaningful moments aren't the big public ones everyone sees. They're the quiet words exchanged between two people who know exactly what it took to get there.

Thank you to the Pittsburgh Pirates, Konnor Griffin, Bob Nutting, the Pirates' Charities, and everyone who helped make this unforgettable day possible for Mike and his family.

For one day, cancer wasn't writing the story. Hope was.

Sarah Broadus believed hope and humanity belonged at the center of cancer care. After first coming to One Day to Remember as a recipient family in 2023, Sarah quickly became part of the heart of our organization. As an Outings Coordinator, she created meaningful moments for families facing advanced-stage cancer while navigating her own stage IV diagnosis with incredible courage, compassion, and humor.

Sarah dedicated her life to lifting others up. She advocated fiercely for the colorectal cancer community, supported fellow patients, and reminded families they were never alone.

In honor of her legacy, we created the ๐‡๐ž๐ซ๐ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐‡๐จ๐ฉ๐ž ๐€๐ฐ๐š๐ซ๐ to recognize individuals whose work brings hope, innovation, advocacy, and compassion to families facing cancer.

This is your chance to nominate someone you feel is making that kind of difference in the lives of cancer patients. Nominees may include:
โ€ข Medical oncologists and oncology specialists
โ€ข Cancer researchers and clinical investigators
โ€ข Patient advocates and nonprofit leaders serving families facing cancer

This award honors those who:
โœจ Bring hope to patients and families
โœจ Advance discovery and innovation
โœจ Strengthen families facing cancer
โœจ Lead with compassion and advocacy

Just as elephants protect and uplift their herd, Sarah did the same for everyone around her. This award continues that legacy.
