AYD took 15 of our middle schoolers yesterday to visit the IUP Kopchick College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. Along with a tour of this amazing facility, students participated in experiments with liquid nitrogen and saw a demonstration of drone mapping. We also took a driving tour around the IUP campus and were treated to lunch in the dining hall.

Congratulations to AYD judoka Devon Carter, who earned his yellow belt this evening! He's already competed in two sanctioned tournaments, winning gold and silver medals. He's pictured with his father, Tyrone Carter (L), an AYD alumnus and judo athelete; and Donnie Black (R), also an AYD alum and coordinator of AYD Judo. Nice work, fellas!

AYD wrapped up the fourth year of our Winter Sports Program this past Sunday. This five-week series of skiing and snowboarding lessons – plus classes on careers in the outdoor recreation and resort industries – were made possible by Vail Resorts Epic Promise Foundation and Seven Springs Mountain Resort. Pictured here are five of our AYD students who completed all five sessions.

Good look: Through popcorn sales, a snack bar, parent donations and other fundraisers, AYD’s boys basketball team raised enough money to buy new warmup sweatsuits. Nice work, guys!

Happening now: AYD Winter Sports hits the slopes at Seven Springs for the fourth year of this great program from Vail Resorts. Some of our kids are taking their first skiing or snowboarding lessons from resort staff, while our more experienced participants are up on the mountain for advanced instruction. And we'll be back four more times before winter's over! Thank you Vail, Seven Springs and Katz Amsterdam Foundation for making this adventure possible!

Back in the swing of things: AYD middle schoolers began the 18th year of our golf partnership with First Tee - Pittsburgh this month. We’ll sharpen our skills this winter on their indoor simulators and putting greens so that we’ll be ready to tee off on their outdoor facilities as soon as warm weather arrives. Five AYD Judo athletes competed this past Saturday at the Great Lakes Open Judo Championship in Brighton, Mich., and brought home four gold medals and one silver. A special shoutout goes to AYD alumnus Marquam Morris who returned to the mat after nearly 15 years; he competed in the Senior Men’s Division and won a gold medal!
