Meet the Artist: Venazir Martinez

Venazir Martinez is a contemporary visual anthropreneur and muralist from the Philippines, known for her vibrant large-scale works that weave together heritage, identity, and community stories. Her art bridges tradition and modernity, often highlighting cultural narratives and the human form in powerful, colorful ways.

Her murals can be found across the Philippines and beyond, turning public spaces into living canvases that spark dialogue and connection. She is currently creating a new mural in Pittsburgh’s Bloomfield neighborhood (corner of Liberty Avenue & Ella St.) inspired by Pandanggo sa Ilaw—a traditional folk dance performed with oil lamps balanced on the head and hands. This dance, which emerged during the Spanish colonial period, symbolizes resilience, creativity, and the Filipino spirit of joy, honoring Philippine history and cultural influences.

Through her workshops, Venazir shares not just techniques in drawing and painting, but also her passion for using art as a medium of storytelling and cultural expression. Now, she’s bringing her artistry to Pittsburgh for a special Figure Drawing Workshop—an opportunity to learn, connect, and create under the guidance of an internationally recognized Filipino artist.

New Mural in Pittsburgh by Venazir Martinez

The mural, entitled “Pandanggo sa Ilaw,” features a Filipina figure dressed in the Filipiniana, the baro’t saya, a blouse and skirt ensemble worn by women during the Spanish colonial period. Over time, this attire has come to embody the dignity, strength, and grace of generations of Filipinas. Draped over her arm are indigenous handwoven textiles from different regions of the Philippines, weaving together stories of resilience, artistry, and cultural pride.

This visual dialogue between colonial influence and indigenous identity is further expressed in the dance itself. Pandanggo sa Ilaw is performed with oil lamps balanced on the head and hands, symbolizing the balance of tradition and adaptation through history.

The mural also reflects the arrival of Catholicism in the Philippines and the cultural synthesis it sparked. Out of the encounter between pre-colonial reverence for nature spirits and Spanish Catholic faith emerged Folk Catholicism, a living tradition that continues to thrive, blending seemingly contrasting beliefs into one spiritual system.

Like the dance, this mural is about balance, grace, and light, serving as a reminder of how the Filipino spirit carries the past into the present with strength and creativity.

The mural can be found at the corner of Liberty Avenue & Ella St., Bloomfield, Pittsburgh.

Sagayan is performed to reenact the heroism of Prince Bantugan, a legendary warrior from the Maranao epic Darangen (a UNESCO-recognized oral heritage). The dance embodies preparation for battle, defense of the community, and the call for protection from unseen spirits.
