Happy Juneteenth!

Join us in celebrating June 19, the day that marks the end of slavery in the U.S. in 1865, when Union troops announced freedom for over 250,000 Black Americans. Juneteenth honors culture, heritage and the ongoing pursuit of equality.

We commend the East End Food Co-op's board of directors for doing the right thing by firmly rejecting a pressure campaign that has divided our community for nearly two years.

The Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh was proud to stand with our community partners against BDS. This outcome reflects strong collective action and our shared commitment to ensuring divisive initiatives like BDS don't take root in our local institutions.

Our community stood firm in the belief that respect, dialogue and collaboration must prevail over division, and that bringing people together is the most effective way to address complex issues and strengthen our community.

That spirit was underscored by a striking detail: one of the products targeted for boycott was an olive oil produced by a nonprofit of Arab and Jewish women in Israel dedicated to building bridges, fostering mutual respect and modeling cooperation between communities. The BDS effort would have harmed exactly the kind of peace-building our community seeks to support.

The issue of banning Israeli products at the East End Food Co-op has been discussed since at least July 2024

“To be honest, without the help, guidance and coordination provided by the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, it would have been very difficult for us to navigate the grant process,” said Bilal Stambouli, the mosque’s executive director. “We are truly grateful for all the assistance and support they provided along the way.”

Do you know outstanding Jewish teens in Pittsburgh? Nominate them for the Diller Teen Fellows!

Diller is a prestigious, year-long leadership program for current 9th and 10th graders (rising 10th and 11th graders) that combines local workshops, weekend retreats and a three-week summer seminar in Israel. Fellows explore Jewish identity, social justice, leadership and what it means to be part of a global Jewish community.

Applications for the 2026–2027 Diller Teen Fellows cohort are still open — but the deadline is June 15, so now act now! Pittsburgh has been part of this incredible program since 2008, and we'd love to see our next cohort filled with teens who are curious, passionate and ready to grow.

If you know a young person who fits that description — nominate them or share this with their family.

Thank you to everyone who attended our Heart of Philanthropy event yesterday! It was an honor to celebrate 32+ years of giving by our Lev Society members and to reflect on the extraordinary impact our donors make possible for our community every day.

A highlight of the evening was a powerful and thought-provoking interview conducted by H. Arnold and Adrien B. Gefsky Community Scholar Rabbi Danny Schiff with Jacki Karsh. Jacki was especially compelling as she shared insights on the importance of our shared vision, underscoring the vital role of honest reporting and confronting media misinformation and disinformation as essential tools in the fight against antisemitism.

We are so grateful to all who joined us in celebrating this meaningful work.

“All you want is never again,” she said. “Never again should any family have to go through this kind of trauma and tragedy.”
