Fallen tree clearing continues to be one of the primary steward tasks across all of the parks. These trees were removed from Frick Park trails in the past few days.

Throughout May we worked on finishing repairs to Dinky Bridge trail that we started during our end of April steward training. Many sections of this trail suffered from erosion over the years, some of which was due to broken stormwater pipes in Regent Square that were recently repaired. So we're hopeful that the clay soil and rocks that we have added back to the trail surface will remain in place for a long time. The entrance from the street was also realigned to a more sustainable route that will be less prone to washing out and widening.

The large fallen tree on the lower section of Bradema trail is now fully cut out and the trail is clear. Thanks to DPW for getting it started and showing us it was hollow so we could finish it. Well not totally hollow, it was full of compost!

We had a great Steward Training day on Sunday in Frick Park. Thanks to everyone that came out to learn about maintaining trails and also helped make many drainage improvements! New volunteers and experienced stewards were able to work on four separate projects on Dinky Bridge and Rollercoaster trails.

This part of Bradema is meant to be closed until sewage work is complete so perhaps it was fate that this huge tree fell and closed the trail. It is impassable and both sections of the trail are blocked so please use Biddle Trail as a detour until it's cleared. Please do not create your own path around the tree.

At the end of March, Bradema Trail received some much needed spring maintenance to address wet and muddy sections and repair a spot where a fallen tree tore out the edge of the trail. We built a retaining wall from the rock exposed by the fallen tree to shore up the side of the trail.

Wet spots had all of the decomposing leaves removed and drainage restored. Spring seeps will often flow water out of the ground for a few weeks and all we can do is make sure it gets off the trail asap. We added more rock armoring to the 'S turn' near the log piles as that section gets particularly soft due to seeps.

Many thanks to our 8 volunteers who put in 35 hours getting Bradema trail back in shape!

It's been a little windy lately! We're getting reports of fallen trees and there may be more as the wind continues. Please let us know if you encounter trees or damage on the singletrack trails. Feel free to toss small branches back into the woods.

Yesterday we removed three fallen trees from Trough Trail and one from Bench Trail. Uprooted trees have torn out chunks of Bradema and Trough Trails but both are passable. There are a few trees still down on the trails near the Bowling Greens.

Be safe out there!

Happy New Year! While we are enjoying a winter break from Frick Park trail projects, we are looking back at what we accomplished in 2025.

We tallied up a total of 870 volunteer hours for the year!
Our 13 volunteer stewards put in 738 of those hours, with 3 of them contributing over 100 hours each!
35 more volunteers came out to help for a total of 48 people volunteering their time to maintain and improve the singletrack trails!

In 2025 we moved over 10 tons of clay soil to repair worn trail sections, cleared so many fallen trees from the massive late April storm that we lost count, and trimmed back overgrown vegetation from 6+ miles of trail in late summer.

Stay tuned for more announcements of 2026 plans, including hosting the annual Trail Pittsburgh Steward Training in Frick Park!

Freeze-thaw season is here! Freeze-thaw cycles refer to the thawing and refreezing process soils experience during colder months when the temperature swings above freezing during the day and below freezing at night. If the trail is so muddy that your boots or your bike are taking chunks home with you, it's too wet to use! It is important to recognize that all user groups have an impact on trails, so we encourage everyone to be aware of the freeze-thaw cycle to protect the trails so they can be available for all to enjoy for many years to come.

In November we cleared fallen leaves from most of the singletrack trails. The goal is not to have completely leaf free trails, but to remove the thick layers of leaves that trap moisture in the soil and clog the trail drainage systems.

A few weeks ago we fixed an issue on lower Bradema trail where the rock ramp at the end of the long bridge became dislodged, so we reinstalled it with a dozen buckets of clay soil locking the rock in place more securely this time. In the same area we also slightly widened the entrance ramp onto the log feature with more lumber. Last week we finally removed the hazardous short metal pipe from Trough trail near the bridge, along with several others that were nearby.

We are so thankful for the dozen volunteers who spent 3 hours working in the rain on Sunday afternoon to build a new connector trail between Iron Gate and the Walnut Towers apartment building with access to Forward Ave. There have been different social trails in this area over the years but this new alignment provides better usability and safety for all types of trail users in both directions. Unfortunately due to the rain induced mud we didn't get to finish it to our usual high standards but if the weather holds up this week we will do so asap.

This is also another reminder that starting next week, the trail and street under the parkway bridge will be closed until the end of January. So trail users will not be able to use Nine Mile Run trail to connect to Swisshelm Park or the Summerset development. This Iron Gate connector trail may be helpful for trail users coming from those areas.
