Building New Hope

Building New Hope 🌍BNH is a Pittsburgh-based nonprofit partnering with communities in Latin America to create sustainable livelihoods. Join us in building a brighter future!

Through education and economic opportunities, we’re empowering people and fostering resilience. Building New Hope is a volunteer-driven nonprofit organization based in Pittsburgh, PA and Nicaragua. In Nicaragua, we partner with a worker-owned organic coffee cooperative, operate two schools for at-risk youth, and sponsor high school scholarships. In Pittsburgh, we engage with local schools, faith groups, farmers, and businesses to spread awareness about and appreciation for the culture, coffee, and communities in Central America.

You can make a difference - choose Building New Hope certified bird-friendly coffee!!!

Did you know that across the world, people drink 2 billion cups of coffee every day?

Many coffee drinkers are unaware of the impact of drinking coffee on wildlife. 3/4 of the world's coffee is grown on sun-grown coffee farms, which requires clearing the land and removing the forest canopy along with the resources it provides. The effects are especially felt by migratory birds who depend on forest habitats in Central and South America during the winter.

Luckily there is an alternative - shade-grown coffee! Shade-grown coffee is grown on farms that continue to plant trees and ground cover, supporting greater biodiversity and sustaining healthy ecosystems. An easy way to ensure you drink shade-grown coffee is to look for the Bird Friendly® certification! Learn more at birdfriendly.si.edu!
