This Saturday was another successful maintenance day at the Mount Washington community garden! Though the weather has been unusually hot, thankfully the morning was cool enough to keep us going from 830 AM till 11 AM without wilting. We worked well and accomplished our goals for the day. We appreciate working alongside our Mount Washington librarians who brought their helping hands and joyful hearts. Thanks to all of you for our productive day!

We, at MWCG are excited to spring into the gardening season! After a vigorous winter of high winds, freezing rain, snow, and every variety of weather inbetween, I am happy to get out and dig into the soil once again.

Our next garden meeting is this Thursday, 4/24, where we will plan our growing season. Itโ€™s fun and healthy to plan our garden ahead of time, with flexibility, knowing that weather surprises always show up! Looking forward to our trip to โ€™s to pick up our easy starters, like:
Lettuce varieties, radishes, carrots, beets, kale, collards, and green beans as our early (not so early) crops.

What about you? Tell us what early crops you are growing.

If you have the outdoor bug and you need some place to expend energy come to Reams MWCG weโ€™d love your help. Get your exercise and fresh air and, possibly, your vitamin D for the day! Look out for our event announcements.

What an exciting time for the Mt. Washington community Garden!! A Big Thank you to for approving a grant to install a most needed staircase from the bottom of a steep hill to the top where the water supply is and a shed that houses our garden supplies. We are absolutely pleased with the outcome. Landforce team headed by Shawn, โ€œYOU ROCKโ€!!

๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒฟ GARLIC GROWTH UPDATE! ๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŒฑ
Greetings, fellow garden enthusiasts! ๐ŸŒผ๐ŸŒฟ Our garlic journey that began last November is reaching an exciting phase! As we eagerly anticipate the start of summer, our two beds of garlic are flourishing, hinting at the bountiful harvest to come. ๐Ÿ˜Š๐ŸŒฑ
Did you know that garlic is not only a delicious addition to countless dishes but also a fascinating plant to grow? Here are some interesting facts about growing garlic from bulbs that might pique your interest:
Patience is Key: Like all good things, growing garlic requires patience. Planted in the fall, it undergoes a slow and steady process of growth over the winter months, culminating in a rewarding harvest around eight months later. ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธโณ

Reading the Signs: Observing the garlic plants closely as they mature provides valuable insights into their readiness for harvest. Keep an eye out for the subtle signals of impending harvest season - the curling of garlic scapes and the browning of leaf tips are telltale signs that the time for harvesting is near! ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ‘€

The Magic of Bulb Division: Did you know that each garlic bulb contains multiple cloves, each capable of growing into a new plant? It's like nature's own magic trick! When planting garlic, separate the cloves and plant them individually to maximize your harvest potential. ๐Ÿ”ฎ๐ŸŒฑ

The Gift of Versatility: Not only does garlic enhance the flavor of countless dishes, but it also possesses natural pest-repellent properties, making it a valuable addition to any garden. Planting garlic alongside other crops can help deter pests and promote overall garden health. ๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŒผ

As we eagerly anticipate the approaching harvest season we continue to nurture our garlic beds with care and attention. After the garlic is harvested, these beds will be ready to host a new variety of fall crops, so that our community garden remains a vibrant hub of growth and abundance! ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿฅ•
Stay tuned for more updates and gardening tips as our journey unfolds! Happy gardening, everyone! ๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒž

๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒŸ A Heartfelt Thank You to CMU's Co-Ed Fraternity Group! ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒฑ

Once upon a beautiful autumn day, our community garden found itself on the verge of extending our clean-up beyond our desired completion date. We'd been working diligently, but with the garden beds still in need of some TLC, we decided to send out an SOS. Little did we know, some incredible CMU students would come to our rescue!

These young, energetic, and enthusiastic students answered our call with open arms, ready to dive into the dirt and get their hands green. ๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŒผ

As we watched in awe, they rolled up their sleeves and tackled the garden beds with gusto. Weeding? You bet! Clearing out plants? No problem! And when it came to enriching the soil with compost, topsoil, mulch, and straw, they were like seasoned pros. They even hauled heavy bags of soil, mulch, compost, and straw up our steep slope like it was a walk in the park.

Their hard work and dedication turned our garden into a magical, well-prepared sanctuary for the winter months ahead. ๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿ

But it wasn't just their muscle that impressed us; it was their personalities. These students were a joy to be around, with smiles that warmed our hearts, and a respectful attitude that made us feel honored to have them by our side. They didn't just help us meet our goals for the day; they exceeded them with flying colors.

We're now excited to announce that this amazing group will be welcomed back with open arms at any time, and we can hardly wait to collaborate with them throughout the upcoming year in 2024. Together, we'll continue to nurture our garden and watch it flourish, just like the friendships we've cultivated with these remarkable young individuals.

Thank you! To CMU's Co-Ed Fraternity Group, for turning a regular day into a heartwarming story of community, hard work, and the joy of gardening. We're immensely grateful for your support and look forward to many more chapters in our garden journey together! ๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒž๐Ÿ’š
