For generations, Bethlehem Haven has been a place of safety, hope and new beginnings for women experiencing homelessness in our community.

Today, that mission continues through the everyday acts of compassion shown by Pittsburgh Mercy associates like Mary Jane Longo and Donna Bova. From clothing and personal care items to coats, gloves, hats and shoes, these simple essentials do more than meet a basic need—they offer comfort, dignity and a reminder that someone cares.

Bethlehem Haven began just days before Christmas Eve, when Smithfield United Church of Christ opened its doors to women seeking shelter from the bitter winter cold. Since then, its doors have remained open.

As part of the Pittsburgh Mercy Family of Care, Bethlehem Haven continues to provide housing, health and supportive services that help women build stability and work toward ending the cycle of homelessness.

Because homelessness is not a choice. And everyone deserves a safe place to call home.

Critical Needs Alert is TOMORROW! Maximize your impact when you give to Bethlehem Haven. Your generosity supports women like Sandra. At the emergency shelter, Bethlehem Haven staff helped Sandra connect with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, which helped guide her through her career options. Now, Sandra is on her way to completing welding training and becoming an entry-level welder. “They got me bus tickets so I can get to school,” she says. “I wouldn’t be in welding school if it wasn’t for this program.”

When you give to Bethlehem Haven on Critical Needs Alert, you support women like Donna: After her mother’s death, Donna also lost her home and faced homelessness for the first time. She struggled to find help until Bethlehem Haven provided her with shelter and stability. Through its emergency shelter and permanent supportive housing programs, Bethlehem Haven gave Donna the care, safety, and resources she needed to rebuild her life and look ahead to returning to school and securing her own apartment. “I’m so grateful to Bethlehem Haven. I really, truly am.”

Uptown Flats is entering the home stretch! The 34-unit affordable housing community developed in partnership with Bethlehem Haven and ACTION-Housing is quickly taking shape in Pittsburgh's Uptown neighborhood.

Designed to support individuals and families transitioning out of homelessness, Uptown Flats will offer a mix of studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments, along with on-site amenities that promote connection and long-term stability. The building's first floor will feature dedicated space for resident services, meetings, community programming, and educational opportunities, creating a hub for support and engagement.

Uptown Flats is about more than housing. The development is designed to provide residents with a stable foundation and access to the support, resources, and opportunities needed to build a brighter future.
